I have a new Evinrude 140v4 bubble head outboard, that has been crated since new and I had it installed on my old baja last year, this year I got the motor running and everything was working great, new battery in the boat, but the power trim and tilt is not working, it is just making a clicking noise, I have checked all the grounds to the battery, and cleaned the terminals, connections, everything I working, who has thoughts on this, from NH, Should I bite the bullet and bring it to a marina or could it be something simple, I will post pics of the set up tomorrow so people can see. Thoughts would help here, was hoping to use it this weekend. possibly sunday

If it clicks in both up and down trim the solenoids are working. I would suspect the pump is not getting 12 V or not grounded.

it only clicks up not down. hit the up button it makes a clicking noise, then down it makes a very faidn noise and the out drive isnt moving, i checked the connections to the battery and everything is tight, where else is there a ground?

Could be a bad trim pump motor too. Sitting around for years is harder on equipment than actually being used...
Maybe lightly tap on the motor while someone pushes the trim button. Not usually best practice but it may get it to “unstick” itself...

Wait what, NEW 140 , nice. Pump should come apart real ease. Can you check all connections and outputs with a meter to narrow it down?

you should be able to eliminate a bad motor, and relays by bringing 12V power/ground directly to their terminals. If it works with juice directly to those, it's a matter of chasing the electrons back towards the trim switch(s), trim limiter. Fuses are good ?

Seems like the trim buttons are clicking the relays, should be between there and the trim motor...

what year? depends on if its a 2 wire motor or 3 wire motor, 3 wire could be what brad said or no power to the relay main contact terminals i believe this is separate from the relay coil power..dave

it looks like a three wire, here are some pictures. motor is older, has 34 hrs on it since it was installed. stored year round in a climate controlled garage, sorry its dirty from pulling it on the road needs to be detailed. I know I can manually make it go up and down by loosing the screw on the right side with a flat head screw driver but I don't want to do that.

I thought it was new..thats a 78 or 79 i think ,looks like 3 wire ..the relays should be in a black box in the boat check for grnd on the black wire and pwr out of the relays blue up grn down

motor was new last year when I purchased the boat from the original owner in PA, It was in the crate still, with plastic and everything around it. guy bought it new but never had it installed then the boat got parked in 1986 in the barn and sat there til last year. when I purchased it and he gave me the motor to go with it.

I had the same clicking on my 87 rude 225 (solenoids). Pulled the trim/tilt and checked the pump motor and found a broken brush spring on the pump motor. A lot of work for a tiny spring. I can't imagine you are having the same issue with a now/old motor but it was a thought.

Old three wire OMC only had a solenoid on the up circuit. Down is just the switch so no click on down means nothing.
Has it ever worked since rigged? I would start checking the connections in the solenoid box. If that is all clean and correct then disconnect the leads and jump the green to battery positive for up and blue to battery positive for down. Black always to battery negative. That will test just the motor and wiring from the box to the trim motor.

Yes it worked fine last year. And about two months ago. I’ll check this week and post the outcome

The solenoid is only for up, the down circuit goes through the trim/tilt switch at the dash switch. Should be three wires coming from trim motor: black, green and blue. Disconnect them out of the box and put the black wire on a fresh battery negative and touch the blue to the positive, it should go up..... touch green to the positive and it shoild go down..... if it does not move, then the trim motor is bad, if it does, then it's in the wiring.

Anone local or close to NH that would’ve interested in fixing this and cleaning it up? I’ll pay I don’t have the time for this anymore

Finally got around to testing the motor and it was bad so I replaced it with a new one, and works perfectly, my next question is what should top rpm be for this motor? I have a 23 pitch prop on it and it’s topping out st around 5200rpms should it get more or less , debating on putting a 4 blade stainless steal prop for better pull I don’t necessarily care about top speed any suggestions?

Prop it to turn about 5800 with a light load..
