My son has gotten himself a 21' Flats boat with no motor, that's only suppose to have a 130-150 on it, but the boat has a hull weight of almost 1,700 pounds. It had a 2005, Merc EFI 150 before they sunk the motor and destroyed it. With the weight of the Bob's Hydraulic Jack plate and motor, the boat supposedly sat pretty low in the back so can't really consider using a bigger/heavier motor.
I'm picking up a 1997 150 FastStrike to rebuild and put on the boat since it's about 60 pounds lighter than the Merc was.
Now, to my initial question.
I have 1996 130V4 Looper Lower unit and there's nothing wrong with the 150's lower unit.
I'm thinking since the main objective is to get this heavy flats boat up on plane as quickly as possible, the gear ratio of the V4 might be a better choice over the V6 lower unit.
I know the V4 is not supposed to be as strong as the V6's but we are only talking 20hp.
Since I've never run a V4 LU I was wondering what some of ya'll that have dealt with these things more than me might think.
Would I see a gain in hole shot or is the V4 too weak to consider?

If you have a V4 gear case, props are harder to come by. There's less of a selection. V6 case can run Mercury props just by changing the hub assembly on the newer props.
