View Full Version : Allison 14R with OMC V4: too much motor?
Would a 90hp OMC V4 be too much motor for an Allison 14R? Specs show the 90hp to be 300lbs. What size motor were these boats designed for?

Probably a 75 Stinger, that’s what I remember seeing on them. If your going to hang a V4 go for the gold and do a 140, nothing’s worse than an overweight and underpowered transom!!!
What's the v4 looper weight again 320?

Got a 16ft Allison with a v-4 and going to put a v-6 merc on it ? others on here put v-6 mercs on there 15ft Allison so you should be ok.

I’m not sure, but I know the looper is significantly heavier than a crossflow. I’m talking crossflows here and that’s what I assumed the op was talking about as they are right around 300 lbs.

I think a V6 is probably borderline on a 15 footer. A 14 could probably float a crossflow though...

around 275lbs
Motor is a late 80's crossflow 90hp. Specs show it at 300lbs. The 140hp shows way heavier at 365lbs!

That 140 you’re looking at will be a looper I bet...

Great motor for that boat. A lot of people years ago ran inline 6's and v-4's on 14' and 15' Allisons, Checkmates, etc
I am not looking at a 140, only mentioned the extra weight of a 140 since you mentioned to go all out with a 140 instead of a 90hp.

A crossflow 140 is the same weight as a crossflow 90. It’s a different motor than the 140 looper you’re looking at...

Ran a 90 hp V4 on my 14" Vandal for years--no issue. When I bought it it had a 135 in line 6. Might be an insurance issue if you intend to insure it--check the hull plate if it has one, or I bet the info can be gotten from Allison. If I had it to do again, and one was available for my price, I would have gone with a 140. If/when the rebuild ever gets done, it will have a V6.

Yes. Loopers are heavier. 140 Xflow of that vintage is reportedly 9 lbs heavier than the 90. Go for it!

I think the weight difference is bubbleback vs flatback. All the late crossflows were bubbles I think, weight should be the same.
140 crossflow is something like ‘78-‘85. It’s probably 9 lbs heavier than a 90 of that vintage.

I knew that. 77 has the one year only gold plated mysterious best of the best tuna’...I’m pretty sure a friend of mine has an 88SPL with the bubble, I figured they all went that way towards the end...

Well, not gold plated ...
if you only want 90hp do it with a 3cyl Yamaha. Lighter weight and smaller gearcase than a v4 plus some were available from the factory in 15"versions.
Any v4 crossflow would be the next lightest choice and more power potential
it will be a fun, fast boat whichever way you decide
I would also suggest string steering

If you gonna go with a V-4 then do a Yamaha looper. Same weight as X-flow OMC. Mr. Demeanor.

The little 3 cyl Merc 90’s are nice too but not as much hop up potential as the Yammy. About 265 lbs...

Ran a 14 with a 150 in line. Bat out of hell in a straight line, couldn’t turn it in a 10 acre field. A ton of fun, though
