On a Merc.16 amp.is there a way to turn OFF the charging to the battery while the motor is running?
A friend asked this and i dont know.
We all look for ways of gaining that 1 tenth of a seconed when making a pass and if the batery is wanting a charge and pulling on the flywheel.
Is there a way to wire in a on-off switch to turn off the battery charging during a drag pass?

Current that's created has to go somewhere. Switched off, it would fry something I would think. Prob stator.....But, I really don't know.
Considering the stator feeds both switch boxes and the rectifier I don't see how you could take it out of the equation and still run. You could disco the rectifier but there will still be the load from the switch boxes.

The magnetic drag is still there no matter what you do.

Exactly, its a permanent magnet system..You will get back emf when the coils are loaded but i would think very little hp draw with a 9/16 amp system..Stator ignition driver windings and battery charging windings are not connected in the stator so it could be disconnected at the regulator and run .... volts would go high but no amps until connected to a load..

I'd be afraid that those volts would be looking for a place to go. Might short something or even jump from charging coils to running coils and fry some switch boxes.

Plus, it's about 1/3hp at full charging load.

Not sure on a merc with a rectifier and not a regulator but I can tell you that on an OMC system with a regulator it can be done and its almost 7HP over 7000rpm. The battery charge side of the stator has nothing to do with the ignition.

I seem to remember a post on here quite some time ago about Champ racers (i.e. Merc 2.5 S3000 type motors) doing qualifying with a stator without alternator charge coils, and then swapping to the regular stator for the actual race. I think this lines up with the concept Racer is talking about. Can anybody fill in the gaps here - am I remembering this right ?

It's not that much on a 2.5. Mine have been dyno'd with and without a stator.

I know it aint mu h. But everything else we do to a mota or bull or setup aint "much" but when all adds up it is much. Just another thing to help out.
