I have the same problem with mine, just started.
What style trim is it?
Single ram, or the triple ram with all of outside the boat?
Do you see any fluid leaking anywhere?

If there is no fluid leaking from the lines/fittings:
This can be caused by two things. 1.) The pump itself may have the seats for the check balls worn out - send the pump out to be rebuilt or replace it. Or 2.) most likely, the hydraulic ram seals have given out. this can be fixed by removing the ram from the cylinder and replacing the seals with a seal kit - watch the order of the seals when you take it apart. The kit is a VERY hard to find part number - tell your parts guy to call Mercury - and usually costs $30-40.
I hope this helps.

Raise the ram slightly, support it then remove and plug the lines.
If it still drifts in the ram seals are bad.Am I correct in assuming this?
Thanks again,
Ed

Am I missing something?
How can it drift in if it is supported?
Please explain.

Sorry,
I guess it would help if the support was removed after the hose ports are plugged

Now I understand, you are eliminating the pump from the system, that makes good sence!
What are you plugging the lines with?

I found some at an A/C repair place. Haven't looked for them in a while. The Merc trim pumps come with plastic ones, but they won't work. Too much pressure. I found some brass ones. Try an auto parts or air conditioning repiar supplier. There is a gauge used to test those, but I don't have one. They run about 3,500 psi on one side and 1,700 onthe other. Don't hold me to those numbers, Skip will scan a diagram!! He's great about that.
