Hey so I already have some alodine 1201 and alodine 1132. I can't find a solid set of instructions on the quickest way to get a decent corrosion protection job on the lower unit. I don't care too much about looks. Need to have the materials this weekend so I can finish and launch the boat on Sunday for the year.
I'm in the middle of deciding which alodine will be easiest, 1132 pen vs getting some etchant and using 1201.
Should i used a primer? what brand?
What paint can people recommend that I can get by this weekend?
Anyways this spring I found the ground cable from the transom mounts to the exhaust housing had broke and the two anodes on the lower unit were no longer electrically connected to the lower unit. Go figure from all the galvanic corrosion. Also interesting is the 4 year old SEI gearcase took all the corrosion and the 23 year old Mercury exhaust housing looked almost untouched. My 1st guess is that SEI used a more galvanically active alloy and it started to corrode or they could have just used inferrior coatings.
After breaking the grounding bolt and drilling a very nice hole in the bolts for 45 minutes I snapped off the easyout. I then drilled and tapped a new grounding wire on starboard side installed the mercury wire and checked that everything was connected by multimeter.
I also replaced all zinc anodes with the aluminum alloy ones from boatzincs and I replaced the prop thrust fin with one that was also an anode.
