View Full Version : 2003 Mercury 250 pro xs racing model question

My buddy has a 2003 250 pro xs on a bullet..the motor ran flawless until he pulled the gas tank to replace the bildge pump..now it cranks great cold and will run great but when we stop to fish after about 30min—1hr it will not start will spin over but will not hit..after trying to crank it if it sets for 20-30mins it will crank back up..we checked to see if it was getting gas and when we pulled the gas link loose it was under a lot of pressure and shot gas out of the end coming from the motor...and what size gas line does this motor use..I know it’s not 3/8 on it..any tips on what is going on with it would be greatly appreciated

Gas shooting out would indicate a vent hose/fitting not allowing pressure to escape. The fuel hose from the factory is usually 5/16'' at the fitting on the pulse pump and a 3/8'' to 5/16'' connector located inside the rigging tube with 3/8'' hose to the fuel tank. Remove the anti siphon check ball from the pick up for good fuel flow.

Are you sure you have a 2003 pro xs or is it a 250xs?

It could be a 250 xs instead of a pro xs it just has mercury racing written on it also if this helps

It is a 250xs. The proxs didnt come out until 2007 or 2008.

Try pushing the little valve stem on top of the vst next time. See if fuel comes out or air. It could be boiling off. The primer would act like a check valve and the pressure would build. Still should start though.

3/8" fuel tank to primer bulb, 5/16" primer bulb to pulse pump inlet.
