02-16-2018, 11:58 PM
Twin ob checkmate on trailer. Rigged for twin mercs.
This is without power, but I have twin fresh mercs available, as I intended to restore.
Hull and deck excellent condition. Interior cockpit old and original, need redone.
Boat on custom trailer, and fully shrink wrapped now. Injury preventing me from completing. $3000 as is, power available. 586-295-1212 (tel:586-295-1212)' or email me for more. Thx.
Pics of white boat is the boat for sale, the red one is a pic I found of same boat finished by someone else.

i asked, checkmate about my model, the current people said the only one with well was my model, and the larger ones were flat transoms.
i dont know.
either way they both have same layout, small interior, mine has dual stand up bolsters, with such small space between, ya gotta squeze...no windshield, nice looking boat.

thx guys.

I'm interested ! Is the trailer roadworthy ? Have you got any pics of interior condition? Did it have 20" or 25" motors. I've got a pair of 25".
Gary can you comment on that ,you seem pretty knowledgeable on these.
Thanks

But they are setup at 2 " below to 3 above transom
So it would depend on how your going to set it up and use I guess..what motors do you have

tires are reasonable for trip, i will get bearings serviced, as its been local only, so? it was bought from sammy @ action years ago, so its never had a road trip. ..probalvy never more than 300 miles total on trailer.
after service, i would trust it with a spare or 2, across country.

i dont have pics of interior, as i shrinked it before i decided to sell.
i dont really want to,cut it open.
it has checkmate blue and white, dual standup bolsters, and bench for backseat.
they are original, and although you could keep the front, i would just reapolster.
assume the rear is not saveable. the deck need a buff, but is in great condition, just like the bottom, it looks new, thats why i bought it, hard to find one that clean.
full rigging controls etc.

I like the 25" motors. 20's put the powerheads in the water coming off plane if not careful.
Ive done both and seen others have too and none have gone back to 20's that ive seen.

Looks/sounds like his set up may work for 25's too. IMO youd have to put his plates almost all the way down to get it to run so all up may be close for 25's.

Twin ram trim tabs too. I broke a single ram on my first Sonic.
Some guys like the big Keikhaefer race tabs but on a boat that small, theyre REALLY touchy. My last Sonic had them and I never liked them.

A pair of 300 ProMax with 129 hrs. Have been following Instigators thread and his style of boating appeals to me now is that I'm on a Great Lake it gets too rough for an STV

So bolt motors on,plug in harness, batteries fuel and go ? Oh life jackets and marine kit...lol

02-17-2018, 10:25 PM
on the motors, the boat didnt have, but i measured and if 20s are put on, the prop center is above pad, but below hull by 3" at 26 in centers. as such i have a pair of 20s i bought, but then bought a pair of 25 mids and lowers to convert. the motor i bought were carb mercs, fresh like 3 hrs since major. they had clamshels from the rebuilder, ugly, so i was looking to put on buckets. but thats what i had lined up, you may want to do something diff? i know a guy that put a single omc V8 on one back in the day...was like 70" .
i would go with 25' s or yes!! they will drown at idle and off plane.

hey sent you the pm, thx.

so then he says he has merc ob V8s, he want sot show me... i know better, so i go along.
he shows me 4 fresh 3.4 mercs, and 8 full gearcases. all on palats.
he asks me what he can get for them?
says he has had them for years.
WHAT a day.

Way cool.

Cabin cruisers are a huge secret for old car motors. Several older cruisers docked at our harbor have twin 440 Chryslers.
Seen 427 GM and Ford, 413 and 426 Chrysler, 413 Buick etc, etc.

Neat old stuff.

Not as much though.

Probably everything at one point.

I remember an ad for BMW I/O's powered by one of their inline 6's and Chrysler I/Os w/340 6 packs.

I guess w/o pic those #s I gave aren't helpful..(have a plate on setback too for height) motors are high enough but was just an idea of how 20s are...
Motors are never down anyway coming off plane..
But yes they would get close.

Where is the Checkmate located, has a survey been performed on this boat, what Mercury o/b's are available & how many hrs on them?
What is the HP rating on this Checkmate? Been looking for a twin Checkmate!
Thanks, Jimmy Hosier

Jimmy, no on survey, boat as is where is, assume the worst, and be pleasantly surprised when it's not that bad...:). The price is right as if it's suspect. I bought it cheap, and so will pass along, the place I bought it from didn't know value. I could ask more, but then...I want to sell, not have pen pals...it's a joke.

located algonac mi, bought from action marine here in Detroit, never in salt, no fuzz.
probably never been more than 300 miles on trailer.

dont know power rating, but it came with twin v6 merc 200 from factory, so go from there.

the motors I have are 3 hrs since major full overhaul...2.4 carb mercs.
25 inch mods and counter lowers from 2.5 200 newer, separate. ( I bought the motors as 20 inch, so that's how they live now, I will separate for purchase)
ok $5000 for the pair of fresh mercs. So total $8000' I really didn't expect guys to want power, so I'm not well organized for motor sale, but I can do in a day.

since people asked, I measured closer, if this had 20 inch on then they never could have raised the jackplates any, as the prop shafts were above pad, but below bottom 'in the full down position.
i doubt Sammie at action marine, the original purchased checkmate dealer, very well known, and expert at setup, would have allowed that as a rig job. I seriously would recommend 25 inch Motors and they are on 26 in centers.

hope this helps.

Sammie the Owner of Action Marine is The Best and a Hell of a Nice Guy No one Better a True Perfectionist and Master of Speed

03-15-2018, 10:24 PM
Yeah he is.
Btw, thought I would update all, as I've had so much back channel contact on the checkmate...she s 99% sold.
money has transferred, all good, but boat hasn't changed hands, just waiting on good weather, as she goes to Florida. (I told him I would allow him to back out, if he didn't like, but I'm sure he will.)

So yeah, on Sammie, I bought 3.4 EFI off shores from Him back in the 80's, they came off his boat. Motors ran so good.
Eliminator boats owner, bob leach ended up with those, and they (pair) pushed a 23 Daytona over 120.

Back in the day when set ups were not easy!
we were lucky to have counter rotating, actually had no low pick ups had to make a nose cone, or rely on bob at land and sea,
only had 3 blade props to chose,
setback was what the boat came with, and lift jack plates were really the only thing we had.

There could be 20 mph difference between a good set up, and a so so set up...and Sammie would find that 20 for ya.

So since the checkmate is essentially gone, and he is putting single 300 on her, we think 70 ish.
So, the motors I had for the checkmate, 2.4s are still available.
(many have asked me privately)

And like I've mentioned, I have a virtual pile of merc 3.4 s. 20" 25" and 30" Right and lefts.
all carb motors, some cosworth, some mercs, some clamshells, some lift offs.
They are all chromed alumn blocks (the above ementioned 3.4 Efis were all steel sleeves).

I should list them on another place on scream and fly.
And unless the deal on he checkmate goes south on delivery, "thanks scream and fly, again!,

update, boat sold. to guy in fla that will restore her to her glory days. he is likely to put single 300 on her, but will decide soon. he originally wanted to keep but is wrestling with wife, she likes her 26 scarab, and is putting up a fuss. so if someone is interested, still, i got the impression he would fix it some then maybe let it go, to save the issues at home? 1-407 590-6567 tony'
