I dont have the correct tool to install my new carrier bearing retainer nut. Instead of hammering on it with a hammer and punch i made the socket out of a propane tank cap. Fits great!

Great job roadkill

I have made a few over the years for this .... real knuckle busters, then found a used merc tool 4 sale and bought it. :o

You wouldn't have the part # for the deeper threaded cover nut would you .... ?

That’s great.
One thing, be careful! The factory tool has a tube that is a relatively close fit to the prop shaft and helps keeps the tool aligned.
Make sure you apply the torque while keeping the tool engaged and aligned.
A lot of torque is going on that nut. 250-300 ft lbs! At least that’s what it is on the Hi-Performance ones.

That's the way to work with what you've got! Next time a good tip is to drill out the old cover nut by drilling through the cover nut with a ~ 7/32" drill bit. Be careful to stay away from the threads. Drill two holes about 1/2" apart just to the tab washer, using a chisel and hammer knock out the "plug". The old cover nut will spin out and you won't run the risk of damaging the housing threads. That's a good salt water engine trick!

saves a fortune and makes you proud to have made the tool.

well done

Yowzer....from 85 to just over 100. Not sure my fish motor LU housing has that many threads...I'll need to pull it out and see...IIRC there isn't that many threads sticking out past the stock cover nut when torqued into place ... ?

It feelz.heavier and HARDER than the stock retainer. But makes me feel better having it lock into more of the case threads. Because the stock one backed out or something during the last run.
