View Full Version : lefty lower
A while back I coned and channeled a lower unit. When re-assembling it I noticed a big difference in the carrier from what I was used to seeing. I put up a post to find out what it was and was told it was for a left hand lower. Went back and looked at gears and sure enough they were cut backwards indicating a lefty. Since I had not noticed the gears difference I thought I was dealing with a common 200 case and applied a torque tab on the starboard side which common cense tells me is incorrect. Am I right that I did it wrong and tab should be on port side or do lefties even have a torque situation? I would imagine they do but also think most left hand lowers are on dual or triple engine setups and may not even need a tab. Any info is much appreciated. Since I have no use for a left handed lower I have already done a bunch of unnecessary work and you might as well have a good laugh at my expense. Apparently I am not done learning yet. Thanks

I’m referring to high performance gear cases, CLE and Sportmaster. Most left hand rotation are for twin engine applications. They usually have a straight skeg and no tourque tab.
Whats interesting with your findings is the part number for the left and right straight skeg empty case is the same. As far as I know same machined specs.
The left hand gear set is a completely different design with the thrust being dealt with on the propshaft not the forward bearing.
Side note: Any time we think we’re done learning you’ve just put yourself in a corner. Everyday is an education.

Right and left fishing lowers (no torque tab) are the same case and part number. Straight skeg lower same thing. Torque tab is the only thing that makes it a lefty beside the gears inside. Now will it make a difference?
Thanks for the info. The case came out real nice and the guts were like new. I am wanting to sell it being I have zero use for it but want to make sure I am selling something in useable form. I will remove tab and leave it straight. Thanks

obviously its on the wrong side.
either take it off or put a normal set of gears in there.....

The other option is leave it be and run it as a right hand.
Usually build the left with different clearances if using as a right though.
Is it a straight skeg or swept?

Rock, have you ever dealt with Ted's up here? they sold a ton of lefties to be run on single applications with RH props, because they thought they were more robust with the extra bearings, etc.
looked kinda' goofy with the straight skeg and a tab added to the starboard side.
Ole Wild Bill use to run 2 lefties, with one turning RH.

Run the lefty just move your steering wheel and seat to the other side:D

Man I can't even pee left handed. Can't imagine trying to drive from the wrong side..

I'll check tomorrow when I get to the shop.
