SO...wha'chu guys doing this Winter?
Mine is refabing a single axle trailer and changing to a dual.
1st step was just to buy a trailer and found a nice looking 2012....so after a 10 hour drive to Alafrickenbama we made the 10 hour drive home with it.
Next day after checking things out I find that I've purchased a bonified POS as it was a "tube" trailer and probably only half as thick as it started....(I knew better being it was located so close to SALT water)....but it was so pretty, I was hoping to just change the pad angles and use it!!!
Welp being the person I am, who doesn't take losses easily, I figure there's enough good stuff on this NOW DONER trailer to just re-do the single axle "channel" trailer.....so away we go!!!!
The White trailer is the 2012 Allison trailer made by BoatMate, which is now chopped up and in the junk pile!
The Green is the original which is getting a complete facelift with tandem axles, new paint and SS fenders!
I'll be keeping the 5000# axle for the rear axle. It has larger disc brakes but also has a 3" drop.
However by swapping sides and flipping it over there will be no drop and will put the calipers back on the rear of the discs.
Us Po Boys gotta do what we gotta to do!!!

Moving home and shop to Texas is our winter project. Titanic hassle, but it'll be great to be out of California.

Moving to the Temple/Belton area. Anyone from around there?

I'd like to join the trailer club, please let me know where to send my dues and where I can get a set of rules.

I was ready to paint my Skater trailer and started making it "cuter" when I realized how floppy the 6" tube trailers are.
I'm just starting to build a full length truss out of my vertical members to stiffen up the trailer.
I'm not comfortable using the boat to hold the trailer straight.

Fixing things I broke during the summer when there wasn't time to fix them then. Selling off machines I no longer need since shutting down my cabinet shop. Sell off tools and machines out of the fab shop and machine shop that I will not have room for in the new shop. Liquidate a ton of used boat parts, boats, and motors I will not have room for in the new shop. Get current building ready to sell. Get the new shop ready. Other than that not much. And to think I thought I was retired.

Funny thing about "retirement" = Less time to do more things than you ever had to do when working a 40+ hour week. Or so it seems for me.

Think my "Honey Do" list got longer or I'm working slower.....maybe some of both.

Looks kinda iffy set'n on blocks with no trailer under it but I've tried to distribute the weight on the bow.
At least it'll give me access to repair a couple'a bruises on the hull that the bunks covered up!!!

Thats a beautiful trailer compared to mine...

Flipping this one over to re do the springs. I found this old trailer in a scrap pile 25 years ago. Then it was only the width of the springs about 3' wide. I added the well pipe and made it 5' wide and 9' long for hauling firewood around. With the narrow suspension it leaned a lot. Well i ordered a 3500# suspension kit and going to remove the narrow leafs and put the 3500s on the outside frame.

Oh and YES that is a turbo sitting on top of my mota on my log splitter.

So I just started on my winter project as I get so bored over the winter. I have not restored a car in a long time. Only boats for many years. But I bought a 70 Challenger with a 440 slightly modified. Total restore into a pro touring hot rod. Learning how to MIG weld. Replacing rusty sheet metal.

Bracing installed/welded.

Total time for this part of project: 2 weeks

1st day ... planning
2nd day ... 1/2 day trying to remember plan, drawing plan.
3rd day ... pickup materials, cut to size.
4th day ... layout, drill, fit back 1/2, weld back 1/2.
5th day ... layout, drill, fit front 1/2, weld front 1/2.
6th day ... cleanup horrendous mess.

Rest of 2 weeks was spent recuperating ... Old guys shouldn't do this stuff.

Next: get the boat off and start prepping for paint. ... Yay!

Spring pads measured and welded today....just to find that I'll have to move a crossmember!
When I measured I forgot about the center bellcrank, being 6" wide where the spring eyes attach and the extra 3" put my front axle right on a crossmember.
NEW Plan....move that crossmember forward and add another across from the bellcrank pads!!
It's just a thang.....nothing a little primer and paint won't cure!!!

My winter project is to install this motor on this boat. Boat is in my garage. Motor should ship tomorrow. Plan to put the seats on sliders so my vertically challenged friend can drive some. Move the gas pedal back some for more knee clearance under the dash. Fix a few little nicks on the hull bottom and sides. Looking forward to some warmth so I can see how it runs. Hoping the 200XS will push it 85 or so. We'll see. Only my second high performance boat so I'm learning as I go.

For your vertically challenged friend... T-H Marine makes a hot foot mounting plate that allows the hot foot to be slid forward
or back. About $50-60..

Nice to know. Thanks. I need to move the seats anyway to allow my knee/upper shin to not hit the bottom of the dash and already bought the seat sliders. They were about the same cost each as the hot foot slider so not too bad.

So I have a new project, and since it just happened....it's now my "winter" project.

My wife was coming home from work, and a 17 yr old girl ran a red light and turned left in front of my on coming wife in her Lightning.

Whats sad is the cost to repair it is about 9K. 75% this cost is replacing, repairing the SRS (air bag system) and getting operational with new stuff. Both bags blew off.

So once I get it home the fun begins....it's to cold to finish the glass work and start painting the boat anyway....

I'm just thankful my wife did not get hurt bad. The young girl lost her license for 1 year. This was her 3rd wreck and 2nd ticket in the year or so she has been driving....

I'm all about doing "Honey Do's" .... :p

We live in Deer country and 6 years ago I hit one in my Navigator. I was skidding and prolly only doing 10mph on impact!
The airbags did not deploy but the cost was still almost 6k.
We now are protected for front end body damage on our Lincoln, Ranger and '68 F-100:

Yes, I know what your saying, about not having to be going fast to sustain $$ Damage. The speed limit on that road is 35 mph and my wife does not speed (at least I don't think so ) And that truck Will speed easy.... But she stood on the brakes and the ABS kept her from sliding and slowed her down before she hit.
I forget what the actual threshold is for the air bags to deploy from the inertia change or from speed to stop has to be XX before they deploy. You were lucky the deer didn't cause those to inflate.

Wonder what a cow catcher would look like on a Lightning ? We have deer in our area as well.

My 1st REAL Bassboat way back in the early 70's was a 15' Tidecraft with an 85 Johnson!
All the guys in our Club of about 25 had Merc 150's and 200's......I built a N2o setup for it and all I can say is WOW!!!!
I had a small enough shot, (and it don't take much), that I ran as far as 10 miles on the bottle, many times!!!!!
It was smokin the 150's and holdin'it's own with the guys who had 200's!!!!

It’s an internally gated s362SXE with a big s475 under it. The turbo setup spools like stock and will maintain 1000+ft-lbs to the rear wheels at under 1200* (read pull 15klbs any hill or bridge at 70mph) like I said work truck ;) . Funny thing about "retirement" = Less time to do more things than you ever had to do when working a 40+ hour week. Or so it seems for me.

Think my "Honey Do" list got longer or I'm working slower.....maybe some of both.

Amen!!! Also has become a task remembering what I was just doing....:smiletest:

Lot's of opinions out there on this subject. Those center bellcrank's on twin axles create some weird and hard to explain characteristics when they pivot.
IMO the geo of axles with springs plants the rear axle when the weight shifts forward while stopping.
This doesn't occur with torsion style axles.

Thanx
We do not see the Bell Crank option in our country, so this totally foreign ground for me.
Food for thought.
I would imagine the bell crank equalises the load between to 2 axles, therefore not really important which one it is under.
I f one has adverse effects then it would be better to have it under the other

So...I'm at the HW store last week and buy several more cans of primer and grabbed a can of Cold Galvanize for the trailer jack.
Not paying attention as all the caps were primer grey in color, I grabbed a can and proceeded to apply another coat on the trailer rails......as I was going for another can I finally saw that I had just galvanized my base coat!!!!
I hope to never see another sand blaster!!!

I really appreciate y'all bringing up "redos".......Since I 'thought' I was finished!!!!

The front and rear crossmembers are original and untouched....when I added the 2 new one's in between, I used them to align the new bunk perches.....why change the factory set-up RIGHT???
WELL...Evidently this tub has set on this trailer from day 1 with the port side lower than the starboard!!!
Must'a gone unnoticed because the single axle fenders had a different angle on the inside.
However on these twin axle fenders, I have no clearance on port and 1+" on starboard.
Guess I'll be shimming the port bunks today!!!
Oh Yeah.....and I dunked it yesterday just to make sure it was centered on the trailer!

Isn't that the truth Gary!!!
Now to figure....guess I'll start with 1/2" shims on the port! A little goes a long way when you're raising the side, which is several ft' away!
Actually the measurement from the hull to frame@ bunks should tell me!
BTW, it appears to be setting on all 4 bunks nicely as far as distributing weight!

If you used the "Used" springs, measure from frame to spring top @ all 4 locations. Possible springs have sagged @ different values.
Maybe switching springs would work?

They are used, however the measurement is different from frame to hull so no doubt it's the bunk pads!
At the very rear crossmember is 3/4" diff from side to side and 1/2", half way up the boat.

my favorite year of them. Good luck with the learning curve-sheet Metal is tricky

Here is My Winter project. I bought the boat in March 2017 and cleaned it up and ran it all Summer till the original (27 year old) gas tank finally gave out. Moving the weight off the bow and going for a twin tank setup. Not quite done yet, but it has been a fun project so far. Every bulkhead was rotted, floor was rotted but had so many layers of glass that you couldn't tell, wet foam everywhere. Hoping to end up with a boat that is much lighter, safer, and faster.

Cool Jay!! I owned a 300 acre ranch just outside of Harper, Tx from '80 till I sold in '07. Son & I worked up fantastic loads for our 300 Weatherby Mags and made 450 out to 1000 yd shots on those porky's from our deck on regular basis.
Built my rifle out of a 1957 Win. model 70 my dad bought new. Installed a thumbhole, custom 26" heavy douglas barrel, reworked trigger and 50mm objective leupold....we used brakes on both!!!
I sure miss those days down there but traded for retiring here in the Kiamichi Mountains and Fishing!!

The motor is a direct reversing 75A so I was able to hookup and electric start key switch. The problem I'm working on now is the speedmaster lower which didn't have a water pump since it was used on an alky racer back in the day. Have you had a chance to run the seebold yet

Well, yes, and no,. Took it to a lake last weekend and with the cold water, warm air and super high humidity, the fog was so thick I couldn't get over about 30mph. Lots of debris on the water too. Hope to try again this weekend. I can say it planes very flat and easy and rides smooth at low speed. My old Valero bounced like crazy unless you got over about 40. This thing feels like a pontoon boat compared to that. Feels like it will plane at 15 mph. Sits very low in the water. With 20 gallons of gas, 200xs, battery and oil tank in back the rub rail was, under water at back corners. It leaked a bunch of water on one side so I pulled some of the rub rail off and tried to reseal it. Hope to check it out again soon.

396325 396326 396327

Made some progress on this winter project. Waiting on paint and supplies to arrive. Got all the crash parts. All but 2 are OE Ford parts as some became obsolete.
I did get the interior pulled to replace the seat belt re-tractors (part of the air bag system) and the drivers and passenger bags replaced, and reprogrammed the SRS control module. This system is back to functional now. This is also the system that cost the most to repair.

While this is apart, thinking about upping the boost 10lbs. And adding a set of long tubes and a cat back free flow exhaust. Hoping to have this truck done in the next month, so I can get back to my V-King  That new to me hood I am going to make those scoops into a cold air induction, with plumbing to the K&N system it already has.
