Trim tabs?

O.K. all you 22 Progression, 21 Superboat, 22 Velocity, 22 Activator, 21 Challenger, and 21 Shadow owners (even the 100 mph ones!), do you use trim tabs? Do you think they would help if you had them? thanks for any opinions

The picture shows the tabs so far from the pad they would be nearly useless at high speed. Problably used for planing off and slow speed.

Dont need em, 22 Activator 2.4 BP EFI 22 Chopper 19" set back.
The boat has no trouble at all planing off. Has a matter of fact it pop right out of the hole quickly. When your up on the pad tabs wont even be close to the water.

20'checkmate with tabs. I only use them when pulling the kids at SLOW speeds. Easier to stay on plain

That's a great looking rig

I was more concerned whether tabs would help with the situation when you are traveling around the mile per minute mark in realitive rough stuff (1-2 of slop coming from odd directions), not so much planning, thanks again.

I run fixed tabs on my 17' vector, it helps it roll over quick. I f you're on the pad, you don't reallt know they are there. But, if you are running around 60, like you said, and you go through rough **** coming from all directions, they really toss you around side to side. That's the only draw back. And in that middle range area, you actually want to slow down because it feels like your gonna get tossed.

That Progression has K-Planes, which are the "big daddy" of trim tabs. Essentially, they do the same thing, but they are designed for offshore abuse and they "reach" much further back.
The K-Planes on a V-bottom such as the one pictured are used to assist in extreme rough water conditions. When running in very high chop, lowering the K-Planes will keep the bow from flying straight up when you launch off a wave, etc.
K-Planes and trim tabs do nothing for top speed - they are not designed to. If anything, they will slow you down slightly since they add a lot of weight.

K-Planes on a V-bottom... Notice how long they are vs. a trim tab.

The K-PLANES keep the blow-over factor lower, & in ROUGH water give you way more attitude (on all 4 axis'...side to side...front to rear) control & usually just the tip is needed...notice how the plane is mounted about an 1" (plus/minus) up from the trailing edge of the bottom...That does 2 things...(esp in a "shorter/faster/big power/big/long planes" boat)... the tips do most of the work anyways & if they are mounted flush the "reaction time" of the hull is too fast & "busy"...& ultimately slower (speed-wise)...In other words, the boat is easier to drive & therefore faster...I hope I have TOTALLY confused everybody here...hahaha...That was a hard topic to "explain"...phew...

HEY HOSER..Never what???...You don't use/need K-planes???... or you're never confused???...lol...K-planes are more of a luxury than a gotta have item on a "pleasure" (& I use THAT term VERRY loosely with THIS crowd!!!)...A "race" boat, used in real race conditions, is a nutha story...

Thank you Scream and Fly and Velocitoy for your posts, you described the situation I was refering to (running in the rough) very well. I am familar with the uses of tab/K-palnes and have had them on most of my larger boats but was curious if anyone (besides the race Progression that I pictured) had used them on the faster 21-22' hulls being used as "pleasure" boats. I guess I am trying to decide if I sould be looking for a set of those small k-planes on not;) thanks again, you guys are great:D

HEY HOSER...EVERYBODY wants MANNY!!!...I can't give George him...BUT...I WILL trade straight across GIAMBI for RIVERA IF he throws in MUSSINA to sweeten the deal!!!...WHATYASAY???...HEY BLACKMOTORFAN...If you're gonna get planes...They have to be LONG & NOT fixed (adjustable ONLY!) & they should be mounted as shown in that pic...Don't forget the weight factor as opposed to how often you will REALLY need them...I've driven 2 VELOCITYs (identical) with & without & in 99.9% of the time there is really no need for them...PLUS the good stuff (Kiekafer...sp?) is $$expensive$$ AND heavy...RACE boats yes...day-to-day...not worth it...speed & expense wise...I love this site ...

Late morning. I have to drag a crappy dock, from my slip for the big boat to the ramp. Its a good excuse to hit the water. I still havent figured what IM gonna do with it when I get to the ramp.
