Building a modified 3 liter Merc for my 25CC Fountain. Started out as an '03 EFI, and has ended up much like an X motor. Borrowed the ECU off my 300x stoker motor for initial testing, runs at least as good as expected. Simons did the stroker ECU for me a couple years back. Sent the stock EFI ECU to Simons in the meantime for a reflash. They call me when it was recieved. I can only talk to the secretary, No Eric, not the person doing the programming. They must be really busy these days. I understand that. I can only hope she gets all the particulars of what I want done. Anyway, get the ECU back late last week, $675.00 later, installed it yesterday... the motor won't start. No spark from what was a perfectly good stock ECM. A little disappointed. Can't get a call in till next week. I'l let you all know what the follow up is. I'm sure they will hook me up. Thanks.

Todd D. seems to have a direct line to him. You might want to seek his help if the problem dosen't get resolved next week. Todd is a great guy and always helpful.

Joe Simons secretary said, send it back and we'll check it out. Hopefully we won't need the big guns. I'll let you know. Thanks Joe for the reply.

They don't understand sometimes. I know that they are busy but when you are spending a chunk of change you kinda want to speak to someone that is fully knowledgeable on the products. I have 2 ecu's to send, but I could never speak to the actual guy who is doing the work. So I am standing by hoping for that day....

Maybe a comprehensive checklist on a form that could be downloaded and sent with ecu's would help. I have always been a big advocate of Simon motorsports. Maybe some customer feedback will help them to stay on top, and improve their service.

Dennis Hoffman is a good, knowlegdable source for ECU repairs and programming. I have heard of several people sending ECU's off and getting them back not working lately. Quick turnaround and he stays in touch with you before, during and after. When you call, you get him personally.

Eric will make it right. Send it back with a note that has all the info you can give on history of box and what you wanted done plus what happened when you got it back. I have known Eric for 25 years and he works constantly at his business. He will make it right.

I did exactly what you suggested. They got it late on Friday. I'll let you know. Thanks

Got a call from Simons yesterday afternoon. They admitted a mistake on the programming. I knew there was nothing wrong with the box. I'm going to do a comparison against the 300x stroker ECU i'm running on the motor now. There was no charge even on the shipping. Thanks for the replies. I will post the results on the comparison.

Got my ECU back from Simon Motorsports for the second time back in January. Tried it for the first time on Sunday, still won't run. They were doing a re-flash for a ton of mods I had done to the motor. I have always been directed to a secretary for communication when I call. Back in the day Eric would personally take my calls. I guess I'll send it back for the third time. Anybody else had an issue with Simon lately?

You could send it to DBR in Havasu if you don't get it resolved with Eric. Only had one dealing with Simon and it was a good one but that was 8 years ago

Problem is already paid $675.00. Plus shipping twice. Would be nice to here from Eric himself on this one. Thanks for the reply.

Ha, good luck getting ahold of him.
I have been trying for 2 weeks now, only get his secretary who is nice but knows nothing. I have spent a lot of money with him over the years but I guess that does not matter...
As a business owner I don't understand why he is being like this.
Everyone that I have talked to is not happy about it.
Since he to busy to return a call I guess I will just take my business and money else where

Since he to busy to return a call I guess I will just take my business and money else where I have spent many thousands with Simons over the years. This is the first snafu I've had with them. You don't get to talk to Eric anymore, as a swamped marine business owner myself, I understand that. I carefully detailed all the mods I wanted done, originally, as well as again when I Emailed them yesterday, and did get a polite reply from Debbie. The reply tells me she has no idea who I am, as well as the two failed tries to get a working control box from them, as well as my original specifications .
They must be really busy re-programming Verado boxes.
I don't know:nonod:

I was going to send my 300xECU to him just to see if it was the problem I was having with the motor. After 4 failed attempts to get past the front desk I gave up. As it turned out it was not the problem I was having with the motor but I was not going to send the ECU from FL. to CA.,insure it for 2k each direction and take a chance on it getting lost( UPS/FEDEX) without at least talking to a tech.

Again, Dennis Hoffman is a good knowledgable source for ECU diagnostics and repairs. Every transaction has been person to person, no BS and quick turnaround in my experience. He has helped me in the past and I will always call him first after the stories I have heard form other folks in the last year or so.

Ask for a refund from Simon and send it to Dave (DBR)...problem solved! I offered to send Simons a spare box I have . The secretary likes the idea and wants me to send it for a third try. I guess I'll do it.

I have an ECU from a ProMax 225X .. was flashed by Simon .. and I had a problem with pre-ignition .. I called Simon and the receptionist answered and said Eric was busy but I could send $675 and a note with the ECU and they would check it out for me .. I called a couple of more times and couldn't get past her to talk to Eric .. I tracked down Dennis Hoffman called him and he said to send him the ECU and he'd check it for me which I did ... he said it checked out fine and he charged me $80 which included shipping it back to Canada ... and he was great to talk to .. lots of knowledge! ..

Dennis is great to deal with and is one the most honest people I have dealt with in the boat business. I seant an ECU to him that I thought had a bad fuel driver and he could have easily screwed me just because I didn't know the difference. He called me and told me where to look for the real problem, changed the fuel curve and raised the limiter for a very affordable rate. I couldn't have been happier with the results.

So does Dennis do more than repairs? . He can reflash say a 250efi to the 300 curve? . Or does he have his own performance curves?. Does anybody know what he charges for a reflash?.

He checked my ECU (02 ProMax 225X) and said it checked out fine and asked if I was OK with the rev limiter being 7500 or if I wanted it changed .. I chose to keep it there .. I'd suggest giving him a call or a text ..

No offence Jay, but with a guy like you, the owners of these companies will drop everything to talk to you and resolve any problems. Guys who deal with them once a year or one-offs have no chance of getting ahold of the head guy in a busy shop.

There are exceptions, especially in one man shops, but in my experience, you don't get one on one if you are not up there in volume of business you give a shop.....

Simon does great work, but sometimes things go bad and the customer really wants to have that conversation with the guy who knows his sh.... crap.... and when he can't answer the phone, you get what we have here..... a failure of communication.

I understand where ya coming from , Ive always taken time to try and help anyone that calls JSRE for information , if someone’s paid to have a part modified or varified digs deep in his pocket I feel THAT guy that did the work on that part and took this customer’s money has an obligation to complete this job satisfactorily IMO the vendor has an obligation to make the modified part he took on that job correct or refund the customers money QUICKLY , like I said I’ve had good luck with Eric and his services in the past ... I Would only use him in the future until the doo doo hit the fan then I’d look elsewhere ....

Good luck ,
Jay

It would be nice to have a trustworthy place to send a "suspect" box to be tested before ever bolting it to a newly built motor and "then look for codes".
The worst thing about "so called repairs" in the past is that, lets say you did have a bad fuel driver. The Motorola "trip-nick" style box has 8 drivers. One goes down ... reassign another in it's place. Say it's # three. New order 1, 2, 7, 4, 5, 6 .... gotta be worth $ 650.00 no parts and five minutes of your time .. https://www.yellowbullet.com/forum/images/smilies/098.gif
