150opti merc or 175XS mercury opti for a newer motor. Very stingy on fuel. Older 200 merc for a lighter but more thirsty motor.

A good looking 235 Rude just came up for sale a couple days ago.

He wants to go further than six miles on ten gallons of fuel.

Gen 1 Etec 150 HO or 200 small block, 418 lb
Mercury 150 or 175 Pro XS, 431 lb

4 stroke claimed weights are heavier and do not include oil.

It's the small bore economy version and looks cool. 399lbs

Wouldn't a hopped up V-4 140 be suitable?

FMP
12-16-2017, 10:23 AM
Or a hopped up big bore F5 , 334 lbs.

Markus

Or a hopped up Yamaha V4.

XstreamVking

The weight and performance given by a hopped up motor would be more than off set by the xtra fuel that it would burn and would need to be carried. A 175XS would have a 6 gph fuel burn at 35 mph on reg gas with nearly 200 hp at 430#s. So figure about 6 mpg with a good prop and with a 30 gal tank you would have a range of 150 miles with a small reserve. Hard to match except with an e-tec 150hp which are strong 150 hp motors.

FMP
12-16-2017, 04:04 PM
Decent but if 35 is all the boat will be doing 6gph probably isn't the best. Almost 200 prop is good.

My 16ft Allison with my omc v-4 mod motor this summer with RJ next to me in his viper went from champlin to coon rapids dam and back gps said round trip 13 mi I have a 8 gal fuel cell left with 7 gal came back with over 4 gal left and we were at wot 75 mph + 75 % the time never less than 60 mph ? motor guess weight 240 lbs ? ita a 12 inch mid motor.

3-4 mpg is what my 200 EFI merc gets on my V-King. It's not bad. But it would be 8 mpg or so with a 175XS opti.

When I was racing I had a 9gal tank with 7gal in it ,a few hot laps and a few cautions and restarts and back to back 10 lap heats [20 mi] 1 mi laps I came out of the water with about two gals left - won many races also with that set up. formula vee mod

cool but at what top speed ? 100 lbs heavier than a v - 4 ? But a 225 pro max on that 18 action no match.

David

Not 100 lb heavier than a V4. I think the 100 cube V4's were around 300 lb. my 115 HO Etec is actually heavier than my 225 Promax.

Buy one of the 200XS motors in the motor for sale section. Once they are sold I won't hear them calling me anymore.

What about a 200 2.4 with the chrome lined cylinders? That drops what? 10-15 pounds? Plus with a single ram, not sure if it is lighter all in all compared with the integral, but you can use the external trim pump as ballast. My offshore boat has the trim pumps under the deck!

He wants to go further than six miles on ten gallons of fuel.

I ran my mod '80 235 on my Allison XB CompPro 110 miles plus a bit of playtime and used 25-26 gallons. Cruise speed was around 70 swinging a 29" wheel. I played with the trim watching the GPS and RPM.... I'll put it up against any Merc!

Wouldn't you want to mod a v4 to keep weight down? Does Merc have any nice v4'? You only hear about the v6'

v4 looper is capable of 200hp but weighs the same as 2.5 v6 merc that starts at 200hp

My 2011 150 HP Optimax is great on fuel. 13 gallon tank and I just top it off every couple days when we go out so I feel like I an adding gas. I add a little Startron and Merc Quick clean every time I add gas.

My 05 xr6 on vector will knock down around 7mpg at 4500 with a 31. WOT drops to a little over 4. I love that motor, except for the rev limiter.

The XR4 had a timing module that retarded the timing past 5600. Did the XR6 use a different method to limit revs?

I have had a 3.0 opti on the stream and it got even better than 6. maybe 7? 29p prop at 3000r's it is very stingy on fuel.

Fuel consumption of your stream is about the same as mine. I have a 2.5 200 carb.
