I have always liked the Cougar Boats even since I saw my first 21MTR in Hot Boat many years ago. After having owned a Thundercraft Wildcat 2, Panther V-Mate, a Hydrostream AE-21 and a Vegas XT and a 21 Talon, I bought my first Cougar, a 21MTR in Feb/03 with a 260EFI on it, which I sold and installed a '98 300 Mariner Super Magnum. The boat ran 102.2 mph on GPS with a Mazco RE 4 32" prop. I sold that motor and put an '02 300X on it. It ran about the same speed with a Mazco RE 4 30" prop. I couldn't find a fat shaft 32" at the time to gain any speed.
Thanks

I bought my first of 3 22MTRs in Dec/05. It was a 2003 with an '03 300X that had only 53 fresh water hours on it. The boat was used in the Cougar ads in Hot Boat back then and I was told by Cougar that the photo shown was taken at Lake X before the original owner took ownership of it in Florida. That boat ran a touch over 92 mph on GPS with a worked Mazco RE 4 30" prop. I ran the boat until the fall of 2008 when I lost the lower main crank bearing in the motor, so the boat sat for two years, when I sold the boat without power to Euroski and he just sold it recently. I still have the motor which has been rebuilt and it is for sale in the Outboard Section. I got more into slalom skiing, so I bought a portable slalom course and a Malibu Response with an LS1 Corvette engine for that purpose which I still have.
Thanks
Gary

I missed going fast and the Malibu is not a comfortable boat to ride in when the wind picks up in the afternoon on our lake, plus I always regretted selling the Cougar. After looking at few STV Euro that I could rebuild my 300X to put on, I came across my next 22MTR, powered with a 2004 300X with only 78 hours on it (also for sale in the Outboard Section). Co-incidentally, I looked at this boat back in 2005 before I purchased the 2003. Since I had two 300Xs, I was originally thinking of converting this boat to twins but a twin 300X boat became available, so I sold it to a man in Ontario without power to purchase what I told my wife, my last Cougar. To be continued.....
Thanks

My latest Cougar 22MTR, a 2001 with '01 300Xs that has only 49 fresh water hours. It was a one owner boat that he purchased from the factory in Salmon Arm and it was used two weekends a summer on the Columbia River in Washington. I also looked at this back in 2005 as well but it was not in the budget at the time and I never thought I would ever own it. Well the opportunity came up and I jumped on it. The owner towed it from East Wenatchee, Washington to Lake Delton, Wisconsin and I towed it home from there-6,244 kms or 3,854 miles round trip for me. The boat came gift wrapped for Christmas. To my knowledge this is the only twin 300X boat that Cougar ever built. They did one with twin 280s which Bob Cruse on here has. In fact this boat was supposed to be built with 280s, but when he went to the factory to place the order, they had a 23MTR in the showroom with 300Xs on it and he upgraded the power to them instead. Come on spring!! Let's see your Cougars-past or present.
Thanks

Here are a few photos of my 21 MTR. For the 2017 season I ran a "mostly" stock 2.5/200 on a 15" mid with a Sport Master gearcase. The boat ran approx. 90 with this setup. My Nikasil 2.5/245 is being assembled for next season to see what it can do.

You should be in the mid 90s with a strong 245. Was your Cougar built in Salmon Arm or Hill City, Kansas? It looks great by the way.

I know there are more out there. Let's see them.

I don't know how to tell where it was built. I know it was purchased new by a guy in Illinois. He had a 2.5/280 EFI on it. Unfortunately he passed away and the boat went to Florida where it passed thru 4 different owners. I rescued it about 2 1/2 years ago and have been fixing it up and repairing the damage done by Florida sun and salt!

Your boat was I think was one of the first boats built in Hill City, Kansas. I talked to them about building me a new 22MTR and they sent me photos of this boat. I looked in my Cougar Photo File but I didn't have them saved. I think the original owner's name was George. I actually talked to him after he bought it to get his impression of the boat. He seemed very happy with it. Fas Kat on here owned it at one time with the 280 on it.

Keep the photos coming.
Thanks

Interesting history on my boat. I saw some pictures of it on Cougar's web site when it was new but wasn't sure where it was built. I did speak to Fas Kat (Shaun) a while ago while trying to track down the title holder for the Cougar trailer. When he had the boat (August 2013) it was in pristine condition. I wish I had found it when he was selling it. It passed through two other owners before I purchased it in July 2015.

Yes, they advertised very heavily in Hot Boat back in the day and many tests on them as well. Here is an article that was in the March 2001 issue of the "Family and Performance Boating" magazine. It compared 3 different power options for the 22MTR. The twin 280 engine boat now belongs to Bob Cruse on here. To my knowledge it was the only other twin engine 22MTR that Cougar built besides mine or at least I have never seen it advertised anywhere for sale.
Enjoy

Dave
It is hard to see the "X" s in the photos but they are 300Xs.

Hydrogasm, Thanks a lot for loading up the magazine pics of the Cougar reviews, I was going to post a pic of the 22 with twins last night but it wouldn't work. Pretty cool when I looked today and found you guys talking about the boat. I grew up wanting to go fast because our family cabin is on the same beach as Bob Cruse's place. My whole family would run to the lakeside to watch when we heard Bob wind up from down the beach. Funny story about the new paint, Bob was worried I would think he was copying me with the new colors because as he was getting it painted red and black I picked up my red and black Checkmate. He promised he picked out the colors before he saw my boat. Then last winter I was looking at a Cougar with a 300 promax because I just needed to go 100, as before I buy any boat I met up with Bob to ask him what he thought. He said it seemed alright but then offered to sell me the twins. I pretty much immediately agreed to buy the boat.. I probably shouldn't keep both boats but I love em both and having the colors match is just kinda awesome. The sound of the twins is one of the best sounds I've ever heard and it's rock solid at 100+. Such a thrill to drive.

I have always keep track of any Cougars for sale especially after I sold you my first 22MTR. There were not as many 22s built compared to 21s and 23s. I remember seeing most of them for sale over the years, however I never saw Chris's 22 for sale before. Let's see some more any length.

My 19’ Cougar, “War Canoe” 2012 Parker Enduro winner, ran 113 mph with a stock 300xs.
Ran the same 34 Hackney 1 3/4” above the bottom. We splashed the bottom off the 21’ on to the 19’ and picked up 7 mph. The 21’s center pod was lower, allowing the boat to ride on less surface area...more speed came quickly!!

34 pitch

slip was much higher on the 300xs @ 10%, but we were running 1/4 inch higher.

Bought it couple years ago out of FLA. mostly bare hull made new interior-hatch removed saddle tanks mounted a new 27 gal tank in the center. added Hyd steering, jackplate. Rebuilt the trailer added my 300 promax runs mid 90ties. can cruise 70-75 with my wife (she would never like over 45 in any of my other boats) I got it pretty well balanced out ,just point and shoot blast to drive. Some old pictures I found on the net and rebuld

I am very familiar with that particular 22MTR as Larry bought it from me without power in 2010. He put the 300XS on it from the 21 Skater he had before the Cougar. I posted photos of it when I owned and also when Larry owned. I was very happy with both of the single 300X powered 22s I had but I always wanted a twin engine one, so when the fellow finally decided to sell it, I jumped all over it. Like you, I bought it too late to water test it. Do you plan to make any changes to it over the winter? Keep us posted. Come on spring.

I actually did try and throw it in the water when we got home. I got on plane and the temp alarm went off immediately. Slowed down, checked water pressure, it was 4.5 lbs at idle. Tried again, did the same thing. Took it out and dropped it at a friends marina. He hooked up the computer and said the air pump(???) was getting hot and setting the off the alarm. Everything else checked out. By the time he was done, it started snowing and off it went to storage. Hopefully its ready to go for spring. Like I said, I'm sure I'll be happy once it proves itself a few runs.

Welcome to the site. Congrats on the Cougar purchase. My first one was a 21MTR which I posted at the first of this thread. There is tons of info on here and the members are willing to help with any questions you might have. What are you going to power your Cougar with? I will look through my stuff to see if I can find anything for you. I posted the link below that you mentioned that shows the deck and interior, so someone may recognize the boat or the driver.

I see you are from E. Wenatchee, Did you ever see this 22MTR with the twin 300Xs on it in your area? I purchased it from a man in your area in November and towed it home to Nova Scotia.

Keep us posted on your progress in restoring the boat back to it's former beauty and post pictures of it along the way.

Thanks for the replies. Can't believe I've never seen that 22' around here. Lucky for you or it would most likely be in my garage instead of yours. Working on getting a trailer first, as it's sitting backwards on a flatbed trailer currently. Hoping to start stripping the brush job off soon to reveal what's beneath. They seller used very heavy grit paper when sanding and gouged it badly. Anyone know if liquid stripper will harm the gel beneath?

Not always bad to paint, was a guy that was a regular at the old Cougar reunions that had a 19 tunnel with awesome custom paint. He was a custom car painter by trade and used to win best custom paint at the reunion.
This award was given by the owners of Cougar boats, done tastefully not a problem. Some times original owners don't look after boats well, when the boat is sold the new owner wants to put their own touch on their boat. If you ordered a new Cougar you could pic the colors you wanted, can't do that anymore.

I am the guy that purchased the 2003 Cougar 22MTR from Bob Cruise. He kept the 300x and I had a brand new 2015 300xs installed. Best I've seen on the top end is 94mph on GPS with box stock pro finish 26P Bravo XS. Since buying it, I had the gel cut and buffed, new interior carpet, new interior, and most of the hardware re-powdercoated.

Love this boat!

I finally got my new Cougar wet on Tuesday. I took it very easy for the first time and had it up 90 mph on the Gaffrig non GPS speedo with lots more there. I had the jacks at one and not much trim just to get comfortable with the boat. I know there is a lot more potential there with some seat time. I will be sure to update this post with maybe a video or two.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I have been lurking here for some time and have learned from you guys that these boats a worthy to have, so far I am not disappointed. I had it out last weekend on Lake Havasu for the first time and everything seems to work real well, I am just learning how everything works. It has a single stock 300x with Sportmaster lower. I really like how this boats rides at 30-60mph, we touched 80 without much effort and it was still charging. With the jack plate lifted to "3" and trim at "4-5" it seems to cruise along really efficiently getting about 10PSI, does this seem correct? Current prop is a 26P Bravo 1, seems about right, might try a 28p. Any guidance on what prop for this setup or other suggestions from you all with more experience with these boats? The gel is a little sun faded, I'm going to work on getting it polished up and will send a few new pics.411991

The first photo that I posted above was of my 2003 22MTR with a single 300X and the second photo is of current 22MTR with the twin 300Xs. The tabs were available as a factory option. There was an indentation in the hull where tabs went, so that the tab was flush with the bottom of the boat. My 2004 did not have tabs but the indentation was there. Bruce's boat did not have them but Cougar did make a few changes to their builds over the years or he may not have ordered them when he had the boat built.

Hi Gary, We are really enjoying the new boat, really a lot of fun to drive. Mine doesn't have trim tabs but not sure if it needs them, so I am following the previous discussion closely, would they help getting on plane quicker? With the Bravo1 XS 24p prop I haven't yet been much above 81MPH at ~6k, still exploring this limit. Not sure if my 300 has the power for a bigger prop or if going to an over hub type would be better? The SeaStar steering is another area I am concerned with, there is about 3/4" of play in it at the cylinder and turning left at high speed is about impossible, any thoughts? I am going to replace the seal kit and bleed it before going out again.

I would suggest you try checking the fluid level and bleeding the steering first because it might be just some air trapped in the lines or it is low on fluid. I put Bob's transom wedges on my single engine boats for a little extra tuck in and I ran the jack plate up to about 5 on the dial and as the boat started to roll over on to plane I would lower it and start trimming. I ran a Mazco RE4 30 pitch and I saw 92 mph on GPS at about 6,200 rpms and there was more there but I never played with the set-up to see if there was any more there. There was about 300lbs of stereo gear in the bow of the boat as well which didn't help. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks
Gary

09-13-2018, 01:35 PM
With a 300x on the 22MTR, you should be finding low 90's pretty easily. I've seen 93-94mph in mine with a 300xs and a box stock 26xs prop.

Finding the correct engine height with the Bob's jack will aid greatly for top end runs. On mine, the jackplate at around 5 to 5.5 lets the prop semi surface and allow for those last few 5-7 mph, while still showing 15-20lbs of water pressure. I only jack the motor up this high when making top end runs. Normal boating its at 1 to 2. At lower levels, there is no difficulty with steering tightness, only when jacked up high and flying.

My concern is getting too much air underneath this thing. The STV’s and the Mirages have a very small forward sponson openings compared to my 21’ Cougar. I haven’t heard of any other single engine Cougar or Similar hull getting the numbers I’ve already seen. So, I’m really in no rush to push this boat much further. I must say, my DBR 300X is a mean son of a bitch...the boat is balanced perfectly, it takes a set like a G6 jet, and that freaking 2 stroke monster behind me seems to NEVER STOP PULLING. Dave and Joe of DBR Racing, know how to make power.

If I were to run a 34 pitch blade, 125 mph is there... and I am 6’2” and 290lbs...I need to hire a jockey to run a REALLY big number in the Cougar. Lmao!

Originally from Edmonton AB, pretty sure just as many or more 22's were sterndrive. Bruce had the first outboard 22 built after a few sterndrive boats were built.

Here are a few photos of my 21 MTR. For the 2017 season I ran a "mostly" stock 2.5/200 on a 15" mid with a Sport Master gearcase. The boat ran approx. 90 with this setup. My Nikasil 2.5/245 is being assembled for next season to see what it can do.393964393965393966393967393968RocketmanI just came across some Cougar photos that MTR posted in his gallery and I am pretty sure that, that is your boat in the back ground being rigged. Does anyone know a source for the flat backed rub rail used on Cougars. Mine is a 2004 22 MTR and it has the flat aluminum rub rail that was powder coated white, of course all the powder coat is falling off. I've called Taco marine and searched online quite a bit but I guess Cougar fit the boats with a flat joint which is kind of rare.

I just came across this video which I am pretty sure is your boat:

Congratulations on the purchase on your first of many Cougars. The 21MTR is a great boat especially with that 300XS. I had great results with Mazco RE4s on my 3 single engine Cougars. Lots of bow lift and they hold well in the turns. My 21MTR ran 101.2 mph on GPS with a '98 Mariner 300 Super Magnum turning an RE4 32. It would still pull me out of the water on a slalom ski. So I got some time to run my 23 MTR this week. I have a question about chine walk. When I got to about 90 it started to chine walk and would not drive through it. I jacked the motors more and it went right through 90 and to 100 with no walk. The problem is that with the motors up they didn't pick up enough water so I had to back out. I didn't get enough time to play with adjustments in the 90+ range but wanted to ask if this is common and what is the best way to deal with it?

For sure I don't have enough seat time in it yet. This is my first Cat, I've had Mod VPs for the last 20 years. I'm glad to hear it's not a common trait and I just need to learn what it wants. It has 300XS's with sportmasters and 3 blade 32 ET's with a little extra cup. I just bought a pair of 34 4 blade humpback cleavers to see what they will do. I hope that they will give me a bit of stern lift to get those heavy 300XS's out of the water quicker and carry the weight at a slower speed. For sure it doesn't need bow lift like my Lavey does. I expect the ET's will be better for top end but the cleavers may be better for general cruising. Any thoughts about what to expect from the different props? I've seen pictures of Cougars plumbed with water pickups on the boat and mine has a pair of fittings in the pod that are capped off. I'm interested in how well that works and if it's worth the trouble of setting it up that way. It seems to like the motors up high. I'll take all of the Cougar advice I can get!!

The guy I got it from bought it without power and put the 300XS's on it. Almost twice the weight as 280's! I have a 280 on my Lavey and it's fun but I'm tired of rebuilding it every two or three years. I have low water pickups with the sportmasters, what do you mean I need to get them working. Are you talking about the inboard pickups?

Wow 3" above is probably out of the water for the pod, just the skeg in the water. It would be some work to use the hull pickups but something I will think about. Thanks for the replies.

It is almost Christmas! Is anyone getting a Cougar under their tree this year? Let us know. Also, Great News!! Crazyfish (Joe) is going to start producing the 22MTR from he original molds again. I spoke with him the other night and he is hoping to start production the first week of January. It will be great to see this hull produced again using modern materials and methods. There must more current Cougars out there and if anyone has one for sale, please let us know.
Thanks
Gary

They will be built in the Chicago and Joe plans to post more details on the project when they start production in the new year. Check out this thread:

It might something for you to consider, that way you order the colours that want and rig it yourself.

While it wasn't under the tree, this 19 is pretty new to me. I bought it late August and have only had it out a few times.
Hopefully going to do some work on it over the winter, may even give it a new paint job as it looks like the red can't be refurbished.

Nice looking 19MTR. Have you tried wet sanding the red to see if you can bring it back and clear coat it? Just a thought. Keep us posted on your progress.
Thanks

I would think being solid red it is already paint not gel, std was 3 color with options to add more gel colors.

Dave, I think you are right about it being painted. From the history I know of this 19 I think it came to Ontario about 4 years ago possibly from B.C. and one of the previous owners had a trucking company and his trucks were red. I know both Kelly Theaker and Frenchy83 owned this boat. I bought it from Frenchy83 and have talked with Kelly (who has been a big help).
Dave, would like to find a ski pylon and maybe a swim platform like you have on your 19.

Looking for info on a 23 MTR. Mine is getting water in the starboard sponson and can't figure out where it's getting in. It looks like it's completely sealed and it only has one bilge pump in the center pod in a small cavity. There are plastic screw-on covers under the rear seat to get access the each cavity but no drain holes for them to drain back to the plugs. Does that sound like the way they are all built? Full floor across the rear except for the small bilge pump sump?

Should be a plug to let them drain, not sure on a 23.

Hi Dave,

There is a plug in the back on all three hulls but if I reach back through the screw-on cover under the seat there is a bulkhead with no drain hole. Water gets trapped in that area and can't get out of the plug hole in the back. I should have taken pictures but the boat is 5 hours away now. Both my Baker and Lavey had three bilge pumps. The Cougar only has one in the middle. Hopefully someone witjh a 23 will post a picture of under and behind the rear seat so I can see if mine is the same.

Strange, not been inside a 23 before, they were pretty good about making sure the hull could be completely drained. Have seen smaller plugs used to drain water so all could run out the back. Type like a 10 or 12 aluminum boat hull plug.

I posted in this thread way back on page 7:) I bought my ‘04 Cougar from a guy in Ottawa Ontario 4 years ago. He bought it from a guy in Toronto. The 300XS was installed by Boomer (Alex) while he worked at Top Gun Marine. The 300XS barely got this Cougar to 93mph, once! (Tall prop, useless unless I was alone, little fuel;) Typically With two in the boat, I’d run 88. I only have one test blast with the 300R, I hit 86 with a Dewald 4 blade 30x15

Johnny Five, keep us posted! I have a 22MTR with a 300xs and thinking about a 300R.

How do you like the overall driveability difference between the two engines? Low end torque? MPG? Etc...

Johnny Five
05-23-2020, 06:12 AM
Yesterday I tested a 32 pitch Bravo 1 and hit 95 mph, which is the fastest I’ve ever had this boat. I’m absolutely loving the torque of the 300R, it jumps on plane so easily! The 300XS I had previously laboured to get on plane. I used to “try” to run a Dewald 4 blade 30 pitch and the 300XS couldn’t get it past 5300 rpm, this 300R will take that same prop right to 6450!

I found the “best” place to drill a 6” hole in the floor right behind my rear seat (I will install a water tight deck plate) so that I could drill a 1” hole into the cavity in front of the rear-most cavity. I will also be adding sponson drains via brass threaded fittings. This way I can ensure there’s no water under my floor (it was full when I bought the boat). I also drilled a hole under the front seats so that I could suck the water out if that “compartment”. Then I went under my deck and through the little door at my kickolate and then drilled through the front of the front “compartment” (so that I can suck water out of the front compartments (turns out they were dry). I hope this makes sense:). Ask questions if necessary.466275

Yes totally makes sense and I am having the same problem. I have 3 deck plates under my back seat, one for each sponson and one for the pod. I have drain plugs in all three spots in the rear but without cutting the floor out I have no idea where or how many compartments there are. I am getting water in the starboard sponson and can't find any way for it to get in. I have tried filling it with water while on the trailer and not a drip anywhere. 466294466295466296

there are 4 compartments in each sponson (in my boat anyway). I found most of my leaks were from my rub rail, so I removed it and resealed the joint and rivet holes.. I have pictures (of another Cougar 22 MTR, not mine) with the floor cut out. Shoot me a PM if you’d like to see under your floor. For me...I just found places to drill a 3/4” hole in inconspicuous places so I could suck out the water.

The other truck I used was after I drilled the small 3/4” hole, I would bend a coat hanger in a 90° bend and start with a 6” tail, I’d turn it while inside the hole and try to find the next bulkhead. If it doesn’t reach, make the tail longer:). That will help you get a mental image of what is under your floor, and help you decide where to drill the next small hole. Then I used a Flo N Go to suck the water out. I also used a scope camera to have a look inside.

Were they just screws thru the bottom or did they drill thru realize and fill them?

470464We purchase brand new Cougar 23 MTR in 2000 from Canada470465 after owning an 17 foot Hydrostream Vector and a 20 ft Hydrostream Vulture. Absolutely loved the ride and stability compared to the Hydrostreams. Boating on the Mississippi River near LaCrosse WI has gotten more challenging with traffic in Pool 8. So it's time to sell as we own a 2015 Nautic Star center console boat which we use in the Florida Keys for fishing and cruising. It's been a great 20 years with the Cougar, lots of good times and memories. Wouldn't trade it for any money. Call or text John 507-458-8845 and check the Scream and Fly Marketplace for more details

I hope everyone is having a great summer and you are staying safe. I thought I would post up some new photos of my Cougar to see some of things I did to it over the winter. I added 4 LED dock lights, a pop-up bow light, 6 pop-up cleats, a billet swim step with an Aqua Step ladder, added LED interior lights, 5 billet step plates, LED transom lights, lifted the engine 2 bolt holes and added Bob's transom wedges and rebuilt the jack plate pumps and upgraded the solenoids. I have put a couple more hours on it but have not strung it out yet. The lake has been very busy this summer, so I have to pick an early morning to do it.

Thanks for the kind words. I am very happy with the boat. I considered a 23MTR before I bought my 2004 22MTR but it wouldn't fit in my garage or on my lift. The 22MTR is quite a bit bigger than the 21MTR. It has a ton of more room and storage space and a nice sun pad.

I had chance yesterday to stretch out the Cougar's legs a little without going too crazy as there were other boats on the lake as well. Using my Garmin eTrex because I still haven't got my GPS Speedo working, I saw 98.5mph at about 6,000rpms with the jacks on 2. My wife took some photos from our neighbour's dock but I was too far away and the photos are small and when you blow them up they get blurry. I'll try get some better ones the next. The boat very good and I am starting to get used to it. There is lots more there but I need a calmer day. I'll keep you posted.
