I got an old 89 200 XP Rude that is over charging. It's got the stock water cooled reg/rec on it now but I hear they never were the best.I've read that they weren't all that great on the Mercs either. So my question to the OMC Guru's is did any body come up with a mod for this unit to use an air cooled reg/rec.I can buy a real good air cooled one for an 1/5 of the price of a CDI replacement unit.

BTW The stator, trigger and cdi unit are all new

Really the cdi ones I have run for years with no problems.

I'm probably going to go with the CDI one.Just wondering if OMC or any one else had done a work around. This motor is new to me and not sure if the reg/rec is getting the proper cooling.I'll be looking into that before I bolt on a new one.I've read where on the Mercs they installed a bleed line at the top of the motor to make sure there isn't a trapped steam pocket. It's pumping lots of water(new pump) so I could just be over thinking this.

BTW The CDI unit is going to cost me over $300 and that's with my Buddy giving me a deal.List is $457 plus tax

Thanks for the link. The cheapest I've seen is $220 US.I've got a buddy heading south in March and $179 is definitely worth grabbing one there.

make sure all connections are tight and corrosion free , use dielectric grease and you should have no problems ....

I went with the full blown CDI package. The high performance digital package. Took me all summer to figure out my flywheel was bad. Replaced it and it works great now. Hadn't water tested it yet though. I posted a few videos here that you can check out. Mine is an 88XP so its really a 2.7 looper. Sounds like a dragster sitting there idling. Thinking yours might be a 3.0?

I was all Black before the Cement Mixer.Don't really know much about it yet.Everything else is new CDI so I will just grab a new CDI reg/rec for the spring.I have all winter to learn about this thing anyway.Dropped close to 2 feet of snow here the last couple of days.

After I put them on mine digital 8500rpm CDI ignition.. changed everything stator, rectfier, trigger pack and harnesses on both motors..they purr and rev like a dream not a miss...I would swear they have more power but
I would say it's worth the money especially if your going to replace something anyway..
But definitely shop around for price I didn't pay anywhere near the prices I saw at first..

Meant to ask if you got that figured out and what year your motor and parts were because the electronics are different from 87 to 88 ..any videos of it done?

I have all 88 and newer electronics on mine being it's an 88 200XP drivetrain except the block which is the 87 GT 200 block. No vids. Hadn't taken it out yet

Took all summer to figure out I had hairline cracks deep in my flywheel along with a bad stator and timer. Wasn't happy. Digital ignition is very touchy. But that's a good thing.

I bought mine with with the new CDI trigger, stator and cdi unit.Harness is good and it runs good but it's just overcharging now(wasn't when I got it).I'll shop over the winter for the best price on the CDI reg/rec.I want to make sure that the coolant flow is good throughout the block as well.I was kind of rushed after I got it because I was going in for a back operation in Oct and I had other stuff to take care of.I'll get it all sorted in the spring. The joys of the Great White North.

Oh mine ran well...just that some of it was almost 30 years old so decided to get a present and upgrade and replace everything....and looks better lol... definitely easier to start, idle and rev better..
