Hey guys been reading for hours and getting no where on finding info to build a new motor. I have access to a lot of old mercs and parts etc. I’d like to do a budget build that I can do with minimal machine shop work. I can get heads all day long mill them down. I’m going for 225+ hp. Going on a 87’ stallion I found buried in the woods. A parts list of what to dig up in the bone yard is all I need and suggestions. Thanks.

Just find a 96-99 200efi. A little compression and some timing and you’re all set.

Bang for buck and reliability a 96 on 200 carb or efi. you can make a 2.4 go with some work but the 2.5 is a lot easier

Depends on the budget and what you can find for cheap. You may find a blown 2.4 (for example) for cheap and rebuild then know exactly what you have and for a lot less than buying a running engine. I have always hated buying a used engine that may blow in a hour of running. Both the 2.4 and 2.5 are good engines. People have got in the mind set that the 2.4's are not good and will almost give the stuff away. I work on both and I have had cases where I have taken a 2.5 200 off and put a 2.4 200 on and the boat actually runs better. just my thoughts.
