It’s Surprising that they are still All wood. I have an 04 eagle xp the layup is terrible. The core for the liner was laid up with some kind of honeycomb cardboard. The holes cut for the drives were never sealed and the outside two stringers which hold the motor mounts didn’t have glass over the wood for the last 8-12” on the outside of the stringer. They did manage to gelcote and splatter Paint the bare wood.

Aren't Skaters still wood core?

Yep and my 24 has had the transom done. Its a 35 yr old boat and was built way better then the 15yr old eliminator.

Yep, looks like wood transom and balsa core. That's a non starter for me, I'll never own another boat with wood core or transom.

This could be added to the Direct TV commercial right after the lady dumps the coffee all over herself "Balsa core YES, I love it"

I just bought a balsa cored boat. It's well sealed and in thirty years I will be 89.

I have a balsa cored Skater, it's well sealed and in 30 years I will be 100, I hope my boat's still good.

395918Its worth keeping an eye on the core (use an 1/8 inch drill and pull a few samples). You can resin the holes and seal them up in two seconds. We thought that this one was dry too. The biggest issue is letting it go. First the core turns to mush, then there is no structure between the inner and outer skin, then the outer starts to flop-the boat runs slower because the bottom isn't holding its shape and eventually the outer brakes and hydraulics the running surface off. The key is to catch it early because its like cancer... Blisters and the sound of dead spots are your first warning signs.

The video that I have wouldn't upload but when we stepped on the core, it shot fuel out of the little upper hole like a water balloon. My personal 24 skater has independent fuel tanks and very little balsa left in it anywhere because its not something that I care to deal with again. I hope I didn't slow it down too much-time will tell.

Joe, did you find this when you were repairing/changing your tanks?

395941395942These pictures are from yesterday. Its on a 1990 24 that we owned for a couple years in the mid 90s. The current owner noticed some blistering on the outside of hull just above the running surface and I advised him not to let it go any further. The core is out, ready to be replaced and bagged with composite. Then it will have independent tanks from Doug Wright glassed in place. The balsa on a skater becomes a real problem if it is bad under the tanks and the tanks are still good. When that happens you have to dig into it from the outside. Right now the rest of this boat still looks good and thankfully it was caught early.

Unfortunately the ethanol issue along with riggers not sealing holes and people hitting submerged objects all make up and create these issues. I am not going to mention any names but there is a 2 year old boat that was over 600K and already has some serious core rot issues. The boat has never been in the water for more then 24 hours at a time and stays in a climate controlled building of its own but when it was rigged, someone didn't chase things with a resin brush and now its a mess. The water intrusion happened from running and washing the boat "all things that you would expect to be able to do".

Yes, we are doing the rest of the transformation in the next few weeks. Its finally going to get back on the water as a "Skater done Wright". Hopefully it runs decent-I have a few pretty smart guys involved.

To the wood construction:

I raised the 15" transom on a 30 yr old Whaler to 20". Wood was all orig and bone dry w/zero rot.

I restored a 30 yr old 16' Checkmate that I found outside, abandoned, uncovered in a corn field in Ohio. Zero rot anywhere, including its balsa core.

100% of the rotted wood Ive repaired/replaced (balsa and otherwise) Ive been able to attribute to poor construction (uncoated floor undersides, remounted seat bases, dock/beach/rock rash, unsealed repower bolts etc, etc) and user error.

Core (blasa included) is very difficult do well and IMO unless your bagging or infusing it...., its wrong.

Professional Boat Builder mag did a story about this yrs ago. Appeared on their radar screen after they were seeing multiple issues w/delamination on Grand Banks trawlers which were considered to be top quality in that market segment.
The story had pixs of 3' x 3' areas of glass peeling away from its balsa core. The core was dry.
As in, ****ty, ****ty, ****ty installation.

Bass and Walleye mag (I think) did a very well researched story comparing the wood vs no wood construction. Had input from heads of top level boat builders from both sides.
End of the day, they all agreed that "done right" they were the same. Also, all agreed, it came down to marketing.
As in, stickers on the transoms advertising "100% wood free construsction" ;)

As a long time builder/repairer and racer of wooden boats and plastic boats w/wood bits in them, it aint the woods fault ;)

An issue to proper coring w/balsa is the amount of resin penetration/saturation.

When I recorded my Vector a 100 yrs ago I estimated 2-3 gls of resin.
I used 11 and could of used more!
That was because I didn't bag it but made me wonder, @ 11 lbs per gallon of resin, how much weight did the balsa save

Another issue surfaced when I was working for Nida Core in PSL.
We had an issue w/a builder receiving an order of balsa core that was supposed to be pre-coated w/resin (can order either way) that they claimed was not.

I jumped in my truck w/a replacement order of the correct stuff.
Got there and met w/them to do the swap.
W/2 panels side by side, one pre-coated, one bare, WE COULD NOT TELL which was which!!
We were shocked.

So even bagged or infused, how much resin does it really require???

Scary.

My bagged and infused viscous Tague built was the stiffest boat I’ve ever driven. It was all 3/4” nidacore with coosa transom floor and dash. It was 600lbs and I owned an 860lb ski racer before it that was no where near as strong. Beef could stand on the top of the dash and it would t creek could walk up and down the boat anywhere. 3yrs with 12” setback and 550lbs hanging on it transom never even got a tiny stress crack and I ran it in water where the bottles (soda of course) in the sponson would be broken when I got back to the ramp. The water was louder then the motor in the boat at some speeds.
