Hello all,
This was left on my bench after finishing my 2000 9HP Merc short block.. I was wondering if it fell out of somewhere around the water jacket area, thought I knew these motors inside and out. But this? This is a mystery part and have searched for hours trying to find its home.
Any ideas, anyone, where this could have come from? This part has a small hole at the end with some rust color around the seal area.
Thanks...
It definitely plugs into a hole. Looks like a bumper or stop. Part number on it? Lol

That's what I thought initially.. No part number (that would have been easy) It appears that water passes through this.
I'll attach two more pics, top and bottom.

On the inside, there is a rusty water ring, so I believe water passes through this as some sort of a water restrictor.
There are no signs of another part rubbing or striking this as a stop or some kind of bumper. I've checked Factory
Merc Service Manual, parts manual and found nothing that resembles this, BUT, merc installs flow restrictors at the factory
that may or may not be in the parts book, service manual or online.
This is making me nuts!
Are you running in brown water, where would the rust come from? Fell out of the lawnmower

Anyone out there recognize this part? I'll assume it did not come form the 90 HP Merc?

It's the drain grommet for the lower cowl.

Your'e wrong... it's the fuel regulator diaphragm grommet that seals the rust ring encapsulator to the fuel pressure regulating spring shaft. without it, you will experience low fuel pressure resulting in a lean condition on cylinder two and a resulting failure of the anti-rotation pin for the piston ring on said cylinder causing the piston ring to catch the exhaust port and dragging a gouging into the piston and cylinder wall. A total rebuild will be necessary.... Just send it to Jay Smith, he will get you straightened away.........................

"rust ring encapsulator to the fuel pressure regulating spring shaft"
Is this what I'm missing? Suppository for pressure (positive or negative) of the cylinder relief ring?

olboatman,
Yes, starting to regret adding my mystery part as a new thread. I think its a Johnson part anyway.. Might have been mixed in a bag and fell on to my bench. Or,,,, one of my buddies planted it there, I had a man/cave garage party.. Good joke, can't say I've never done that to another mechanic back in the day. Time will tell. I just can't imagine this came from my recent build (Merc 90HP)..

Looks really familiar. Hard line oil pressure firewall grommet, ebrake park brake, speedo cable, throttle. The center cut and markings?

You guys are BRUTAL! Been laughing all day "needs total rebuild, take it to Jay"!
Seems us motor workers always "help a friend out". Put some weird piece on the bench with the tools think done, see the "WTF is this?" Drives ya nuts! But tell the truth later as "got ya"..HA!
But the funniest thing when I worked Machinist at Reynolds Aluminum was some one (friend of mine) found a horseshoe belt buckle. So "game on". Hide its some ones tool box. AHA..found, and do another. Went on good 5 years! Then my great friend work passed at 50 with cancer.
Guess where found? He started it, and I was the last to "find it". SOB was UNDER THE FELT MY PRECISION MIC's!
Its still with me 2 decades later. Above the shop door..Rings? Ya got company. Just never see Tommy again walking thru the door. A win/lose event...lotta fun though..(damn gearheads..special fun loving but honest breed ya got as friends..and OK with me!)
Actually "its the differential girdle spring going to the upper end of the grammy'
(Never gets old..HA!)

Yeah, funny stuff..
I rebuilt an inline 150 XS for a buddy of mine, to factory specs (with a little help from Mercury's Service Tech).. I had a BBQ with a few of my buddies the day he was to pick it up. They (my buddies) conspired together and snuck a wrist pin needle bearing on my bench next to my C-Clip installing tool.
A few beers later my buddy (the owner of the XS) pointed out the needle bearing.. Have you ever had that sinking feeling? Sobering isn't it? I'll never forget that night, #@$%!,,, bad ass joke! I remember moments after they told me what they did, they were doubled over with tears.. I still don't think its that funny...

By the way, I don't think this grommet is a "corn hole grommet".. Might be something else that's just as important though..
