the cylinders [2] came plated, had steel sleeves installed, used factory pistons/ring sets that are for plated cyls, machinist polished the finish to 400 grit.

will the pistons/rings survive in normal use, this is on a water cooled late model Polaris atv.

just asking for opinions here.

You need to get rings that are made for a cast cylinder, or make sure that the rings you have are compatible for use on a cast bore.

I agree. Don't work on an outboard can't see why it would be any different on an atv. Mike

I ran gold rings on 260......1 steel hole.... tore it down after 30hrs..... ring wear was the same on all six

hit steel sleeve with brush before assembly

Same, except for all six being steel. Works fine with the proper finish on the bores.

light 400 grit ball is what machine shop used, bore size, oor and taper was within spec, cyl pressure calls for 210-250 and bench test showed 250, the reason I ask was I used aftermarket rings on the last assembly with new sleeves but not finished to 400, using 93 oct this time and hoping oem rings will hold up.

I know its not boat related but trust the opinions here, thanks everyone

Packman ,
Did you get the answer you were looking for ... ?????

Cuz honestly , I didn't understand the question ... :nonod:

Lets throw out the NIC part as it is no longer applicable .

Are the new sleeves "steel" or "iron" ?

Piston's will be fine in either material type .

What are the rings made out of , are they plated ?

As long as they are made from "dissimilar" metal , it will be fine .
If the sleeves are from advanced they will be standard cast or Pearlitic ductile iron.
If your "aftermarket" rings are from Wiseco then they are a good steel base with a hard chrome coating. Everyone has their own honing method . But if you go strictly by the book , this is what you will find .

http://www.wiseco.com/PDFs/Manuals/MSeries.pdf

Cast Iron Sleeved Cylinders To ensure proper ring seal, it is necessary to hone the cylinder with a rigid or brush hone. DO NOT install a new piston without honing the cylinder to break the glaze. Finish hone with a 280 grit. Crosshatch is necessary to ensure proper ring seal and adequate lubrication.

got to correct my statement of the cyl was nikasil, turns out the cyl came as steel according to manufacture, so the pistons and rings would have been for steel cyl, sorry ! age creeping up on me.

Chaz I had to call La Sleeve to get the part # La-5395 and here is all I have seen on the sleeve material

[ Re-sleeve worn or seized cylinders with sleeves manufactured by LA Sleeve Co.
An economical solution available for riders, racers and engine builders everywhere.
Centrifugal castings used in these sleeves are made from a carbon-chrome-molybdenum alloy of 200 Brinell hardness, ensuring ease of installation, trouble-free boring and a dependable, long-lasting engine ]

Old age creepin up is better that when it has caught up ... LOL Ol boat man Gary would prob call us both ..... kids :D

To call a chrome-molly anything a ... casting . Seemed a bit strange to me , so I just had to look and learn for myself , before jumping to conclusions and saying .. hey It's Hollywood , what do ya expect ... :)

Basically , LA uses a high iron content carbon and during the Austempering process they alloy in a few different ferrous metals to improve it's mechanical properties . An improved cast iron if you will ... ;)

You didn't say what rings you have .. and I'm gonna leave that one up to you to find out and report back . And to show you paid attention to detail , give us the guys first name and extension # with whom gives you ring info ...
