View Full Version : 18" Chopper: Ron Hill vs Mercury
Looking for a 10.5 x 18"chopper for our Voodoo with 60hp Merc on it. Any opinions on which chopper prop is better? A Ron Hill chopper or the Mercury chopper?

Ron Hill's are very inconsistent as far as the pitches go between blades. Mercury's Stock for stock are better.

+1 I have a couple hill props IMO good inexpensive lake, river or break in props. I find merc props to perform much better even in stock form.
Thanks for the info. Yes I am talking stock new props. Tough to find either of these used up here in Canada. Not much price difference between the two by the time you figure in shipping and exchange rate for the Ron Hill. The Mercury chopper I can get locally.

Ron hill props look nice, but it seems everyone who has a good one has spent a lot of money sending it off and having it re-worked.
Rons props are like his brain, not exactly right and definitely need treatment...

The fastest prop I ever ran on my 16' Baja was a Ron Hill Hoss copy. Great prop.

is it an old ron hill prop ? or is it one his son makes ?
cheap props can become very expensive if they need to be sent off straight away and put right.

The Hoss copy I tried was a new prop from Ron Hill. 13 spline 27" pitch. I just bought a used Ron Hill 28 for my Allison.

Between those two I would choose the Mercury prop. Their cleavers are incredibly consistent and fantastic performers. Additionally, Kevin at R&R Prop Shop is a fantastic person to talk to about props. Doug at Spinelli is also somebody you might want to call.

Thanks for the info, looks like we have found an original Mercury chopper, just have to get it re hubbed to 13 spline. Hope to find a second prop for the Voodoo by next spring, Always good to have at least 2 props :)
