View Full Version : How to identify merc ECU?
Dumb question, but how do you identify which ECU is on a merc EFI? Is the model number under the cover?
Also anyone know what would be the stock ECU for a 90 2.4 Bridgeport EFI?
Thanks

The ecu # should be on the back of it. It's usually the last 2-3 characters which identify it, A17, A63, A27, etc. I have seen where merc has "engraved" the ID on the back of the ECU also.
I can't remember which ECU came on the 90 Bridgeport EFI, even though I used to have one. I tried 2.5 ECU's on it, and they did not work well. It was best with a Mech TPI, set correctly, and that motor ran "real strong". That was before S&F was around also, I'm sure there are some guys on here who have had some success with other setups.
Good luck

MXZ,
I just sent an ECU off of a 91 Bridgeport EFI this week to Rapair for digital update. It was an A13. I believe the other 2.4 box used was A7.

Thanks for asking that question brent, you beat me too it.
the ecu in question is actually mine and my brother was able to beat me to a computer.
SMS or Gtrain, any Idea what the two different ones A7 or A13 are suppossed to rev to, I believe the A7 has a max of 7000 but what about the A13.
thanks for the responses

I must've had the A13, because I could spin that motor over 8,000 rpm's on an STV pro comp.

The rev-limiter on the analog ecu motors is a separate component wired to the switch boxes. The factory setting is 7800 on the motor I referenced above. The Rapair digital version renders the rev-limiter obsolete and includes RPM control completely within the ECU management functions. (And can be programmed at any limit you want)
An easy way to identify analog from digital is the digital box will have two wire tails coming out of it the short set is for reading and programming the ECU . The analog will only have the one wire harness. Also the digital boxes ussualy have a white sticker on the side of the box. The "A" in the part number dosn't mean it is an analog. Hope this helps.

For what it is worth, I have a chart up at http://www.biggerhammer.net/mercury/ that displays the various ECUs.

Warren, I checked yours when I was up north today. It has A7 engraved on the back in 2 spots.
