I got my Carson's reeds today and in the process of putting them in. Do I use the opening restrictor or leave it out. If I leave it out I was going to use a piece of brass to distribute the load from the screws. I was also considering cutting the screws since they interfere with the flow. Thanks for help

don't know about ccms reeds you might want to call them before they close for the day, boyesen dual stage reeds you don't use the reed stops.

Those reeds are old....Merc stopped using the plates way back. They now just have a strip about 3/8 wide.I would think the plates would keep the reeds from opening fast as the air behind the reeds has nowhere to go. Just mo.

I just talked to someone at Carson's and he said if it had stops use them. Now wether to follow his advise.

Ask for advise......The long screws make it harder for them to back out. If short red loktite.

Ok the stops are in. They were at ~.300 I opened them up to ~.375. I figure while I'm at it I'll take.050 off the reed plate. Thanks guys

Are you also taking .050 off the intake?

I was told if you want more performance from your 5 pedal, You need to convert it to the large 4 pedal setup like this.

It's a vertical reed motor. And in theory you could cut the reed cover on this but in reality you can't because the casting has a thin spot that would blow through. I have it together now, cleaned all the parting lines/flash of the cages, lapped the sealing surface, n trimmed the screws. 390238

How and where does a motor bennefit from the reed stops

Nowhere really performance wise, but prevents them from flexing too far in one spot and causing them to break. At best maybe a little low end torque.

The farther the door opens the farther it has to close. The stops keep them from opening unnecessarily too far. Chris said that's why the higher the intended rpm the stiffer the reeds. There will be a point of diminishing return when the "Extra" flow from opening more is pushed back out cause they didn't close in time.

Either way this isn't a "performance" motor and I'm just trying to keep it running good till my wife let's me get one. :D

A shortened stock reed stop is the best way to go . It allows the reed to "roll" open around the radius rather than to let it get the majority of it's movement from the "hinge point" . It's like a paperclip , bend it back and forth you have two pristine pieces and a small area that's wore out and broken .
