How do you physically premix your fuel with tank in boat?

Ok, I think I got a lame question, but I've been doing a lot of gloom and doom reading about ditching my VRO (1990 GT150), but I'd like to know how one is supposed to premix the fuel then? Just pour the required amount of oil into the boat fuel tank and hope it mixes? Rock boat back and forth on the trailer and call it good enough? Premix it in cans and then pour it in? Thanks for any info!

I used to add oil first and then gas up. Between the boat on the trailer moving around on the way to the ramp and the gas swirling around while filling never had an issue. I have seen people fill 5 gal tanks and shake the oil up a bit before adding to the tank. But I was always adding 50-100 gal of gas at time.

If trailering I figure out how much gas i'm adding. Dump the oil in, then add the gas. the adding of the gas and the trailer ride is more then enough to mix.

In reality even witout the trailer ride it mixes fine with just filling.

I will say if you have an empty tank and you add a bunch of oil before adding any fuel it can, and will, get straight oil into the pickup and cause a problem with the motor like you have never seen before. (motors won't run on oil only) I have seen it happen and even did it myself ONCE. So as long as fuel is in the tank do it however you like as was said above.

Same here. I haven't been doing it as long as some of these old timers have but they do it right. No shaking needed...oil and anti-carbon juice at the house first then drive to the gas station and fill to the proper ratio (16/6). The gas station pump pressure does sufficient mixing. Then drive to the ramp...good to go!

Years ago, you could buy pre-mixed gas at the pump in the marinas.

Empty tank: add a few gallons of gas, add oil, finish up with gas.
Gas already in tank: Add oil, add gas.
2 cycle oil mixes easily with gas, so no rocking necessary.

Pre-mixing it in 5 gallon jugs and using a filter funnel is really the best way to go, but not necessary (it does keep the dirt out of the tank though)

Just put gas first then oil then gas on top you wont have any issues. I've always done it at the dock like that without any issue. Just don't dump the oil in first and you'll be fine.

I Remember those pumps at the dock that added the oil for ya. Could dial in the mix you wanted right on the pump.

I remember premixed but not dial the ratio. Would take bit of fuel to clear the previous mix. Some of those hoses are long.....

I'm "of a certain age", and I certainly remember that too. I only used it in emergencies. I also worried about getting some of the last guy's mix, but even more than that, I was concerned about the quality of the oil I was getting. :rolleyes:

With a portable tank, I add all the oil to the gallon or so that's left, slosh it a little, and fill it. With a bigger permanent tank, I put half the oil in, half the gas, dump the rest of the oil, and fill it.
Probably doesn't improve a damn thing, but it makes me feel better.

That’s how i do my drag with a small tank but I’m not doing that for 30 gallons at a time in my bass boat

Since my boat lives on a marine railway, I have to gas it with jerry cans. I am not consistent about gas or oil in the jerry can first. What I can say is that the fuel and oil mix to a consistent color very quickly with no effort from me.
