OMC hub cooling

There was a post a while back by one of the OMC guru's (Racer I think) that said to drill a hole at the bottom of the cavity behind the exaust in the lower unit to let in addn'l water to cool the hub.

Did this mean drill a fresh hole at the bottom of the vented cavity directly behind the exhaust?

Or did it mean to open up the cast tube that runs from the torque-fin pickup???

I think the answer is #1, but it's not clear to me why the vents + exhaust pressure don't kill the benifit. Venturi effect??
