85 to 140ish Transformation do i have all the parts ???
At last i have almost gathered all the parts is there anything i should add???
Parts gathered so far
Carbs 1 5/16 from a 140 (with carb kit)
Intake manifold Should i stay with mine form the 85 or change to the older 140 ????
Reeds CCR sport
reed stuffers from 140
Bubble Exhaust 140
New! Exhaust fillers from 140
High Comp Heads from 140
New stator

Now the plan is to strip down port the 85 only squaring up ports and not taking any height of them.
Whist cutting out the bottom rib for the exhaust i will scallop the piston and cylinder to match.
I know i will have to get the block machined to accept the filler blocks so everything is flush.
Is there anything else i should whilst the block is in bits ???
Hopefully a hone and a new set of rings will do the job. I will balance conrods and pistons.
I have read about someone losing the top ring and having no trouble ????????
I only want to build fast reliable lake boat No drag or flat out WOT all day
So what if anything else should i do ???

Looks like you got everything you need EXCEPT: that intake and carbs and alum air box tells me its 1976 and older so you have a small bore block not a 3.5 inch bore block? or that's just the carbs you bought?

No thats the carbs i bought. My engine is the 1980 model J85TLCSA so she is the 3.5inch
Would you do anything else to help with the readability issue ? As well as a new Sator i have a newish timer base.
I have two blue cdi units 582811 but i dont know how much they restrict the rpm i believe they limit to about 5400?? But can someone clarify this please 384289
Would i be better get the black unlimited or stick with these ???

you need a better tuner to get a bit more power from your motor.
I think the ideal would be the 1977 140 tuner. (tapered cone shaped exhaust)
cant see why you couldn't make one if you get the sizes of it. or make it very similar atleast..

5400 rpm for the limiter would be crazy low, I think its going to be 6700 for those.

If they are aftermarket power packs with no lettering or #s they have no limiter.

Unfortunately they are blue and numbered 582811
I dont know exactly to what RPM they a limited to would be good if someone can point me in the right direction
I would tackle the tuner mod Phil if i could get the dimensions or at least a prop pic of one and not just in the BRP site
The thing is i dont want to go crazy with this build i want power with reliability so maybe the limiters will be a good thing ????
I dont know one side says go for the speed it will only be used about 5 days a month. the other side says the boat will be sitting for 2 weeks at a time doing nothing all i want to be able to do is turn the key and away we go. No trouble or worries about breaking down in the middle of the loch.
Think i need all the help i can get fro you guys

dude for what your going to do to your motor you are basically making a race powerhead and you will NOT LIKE THE OUTCOME OF IT. Do not scallope the pistons or the block just make it as a stock 140 and it will do just what you want it to do or you will be looking for another powerhead to replace the one you are going to f*** up.

Stick to the basic clean up smart tuning and good compression and exhaust.:iagree:

Thanks for the guidance guys. That's the kind of feed bank I'm looking for. So should I just port to 140 size do the machine for the bubble back and filler plates. Then rebuild from there on ?

yep just don't raise the ports.

What would be smart tuning ? If i port to 140 size and NOT raise the height of them. What else would / could be done without going to race mod spec ?
I fully understand that i am taking on a HUGE task so if there are any hints or tips please feel free to fire away.
I was told that some guys used to cut/machine the inlet manifold was this a race mod ????
