I have my 85 running just but it keeps dropping the two starboard cylinders
Each time it has blown the cdi unit.
I have checked the eartrhs of the coils plus the cdi unit there selves.
Is there any thing else i should be checking for.
This has been four cdi units in the space of two weeks
Please help on this as there are only limit to how many cdis i can go through.

Check the stator voltage, I've seen stators put out too much and fry powerpacks........

Check your rectifier.

Ok so after a day of trouble shooting found out that I have a defect timer base. This has been the fault

What did you find on the timer?

While checking the ohms on the 4 wire connector I found that one of the wires was not giving a reading. I checked that it was not shorting or broken. This was the reason I was not getting a spark on the starboard side. I have to check the cdi units that I have taken off just in case they haven't been blown. Just goes to show look at all things in detail and don't think of one cause and stick with that

Broken wire will do it, when they break most often right at the pin going into the plug.

Yeah i checked there but nope it was ok there
The break must be right at the base. I checked the continuity from just under the base but got a reading so the fail is in the timer
I didnt figure on that blowing CDI but i guess it was just luck that it started working again when i put on the new CDI
Well i have leaned from this and hope others have as well

Timer base wires break from being work hardened. It's always best to check everything when diagnosing. My rule of thumb has always been to do the basics: compression, spark and fuel. Check them all first, then dig in.
