My engine is a freshly rebuilt 96 Mariner 2.5l 200 hp mag. Efi. And I am looking into doing a few mods for some added power. What is the best bolt on for this engine. What would be the average of changing the reeds to Boyesen dual-stage power reeds? And if I went with the boyesen reeds are they anything else that has to be done for they to work properly? Thanks in advance.

IMO, wont see a big difference in all out performance on reeds. May see a cleaner idle and better throttle response. Don't believe that 400 rpm increase marketing crap. It is a good idea to replace them in performance applications in case you break one it won't damage your engine, and may see a slight improvement if your current reeds are wo out. I would also go with Chris Carson or TDR reeds. Raising compression to 145 psi with tighter heads prob best bolt on and adding 1 inch reed spacer from Chris Carson (can get while getting reeds) will help midrange. Index flywheel on all 6 cylinders and set timing at 25 BTDC on highest cylinder. Most other considerable improvements would have had to been done when being built. A Bob's tuner wouldn't hurt either.

Thank you very much

You will see more speed gain in adjusting your set up than mota mods. Such as adding a jackplate. Low water pick up and a good prop and that will increese your speed more at first.

I have a custom prop and a jack plate.

:iagree: Speed is achieved mostly by set up. You'll find most mota mods improve how fast you get there but set up affects top end more. Don't get me wrong, more power will allow you to turn more rpm and maybe turn a bigger wheel, but will require more than bolt on's to make a significant difference. Acceleration is awesome though! Plus being able to pull out turns harder than most is very cool!

That's what I am looking for. More power out the hole and acceleration.

I am setup the best possible far as prop to pad , jack plate ect.

Sweet, then get ya some Chris Carson reeds, intake spacer, up the compression, get ya a JSRE tdc gauge and index all six cylinders to 25 BTDC, remove all timing boxes, all you want is stator, trigger, switchboxes, and coils in ignition system, and set timing to highest running cylinder to 25 and youll feel a noticeable increase in acceleration.

Trade up for a 225 Promax. Probably more cost effective and a better end result. I modded my 150 and then went PM. I am not going much faster, partly by choice, but the acceleration and speed with a load is worth it. You are starting 50 HP ahead, but if it were my coins, PM.

Unless you take that motor apart and do some porting mods the top end speed won't hardly change...trust me. If all your looking for is low end power then compression is key. The type of fuel you run (or amount of change you want to spend on a gallon) determine how much compression you can run.

talk to Jay about heads that will increase the compression and have o-ring gaskets. i have a barn full of 200 efi and carb motor with blown gaskets. between 1988 and 2004 i have blown 7 motors plus another covered by warranty. since i bought a 200xs with o-rings i have not blown a motor.

good luck.

Ya wanna give those trash gasket motors away?

Lighter boat works better? I gained more speed moving my 150 XR4 from a Virage to an SS2000 than by moving from the XR4 to the 225 PM on the SS2000. Lots more.
