My starter motor spins, but the splines do not rise up to engage the flywheel. I tried charging for a couple of hours, no change.
Then this weekend I hooked up a 50A charger for 30 minutes and with 50A still on, no change.
So I think it's the starter. I bought a new one from Amazon. Any tricks to the installation I should know?
thanks

Have your battery load tested, no matter how long you charge it if it don't pass a load test it is junk.
Hope it's a factory or ARCO and not a foreign made unit, that will not last.

The starter is probably junk as it was stupid cheep. But but if it gets me through next week...
I would have thought that the 50A charger would turn a starter with no charge time.

The bendix is sticking. It's been sitting a while I bet? Take a flat head and carefully push it up and turn it and I bet it goes up and sticks up, then hit the starter and see if it spins over if that's the case spray some lube on it and work it back up and down till it's free.
Very common on old Merc starters that have been sitting along time

Only sitting a couple of weeks. I put a bit of oil on it Sunday am. I can try a flathead this weekend.
I also arranged to have have my current starter rebuilt in case my cheap on is too cheap.

A Bendix drive is a type of engagement mechanism used in starter motors (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starter_motor) of internal combustion engines (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internal_combustion_engine). The device allows the pinion gear (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinion) of the starter motor to engage or disengage the flywheel (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flywheel) of the engine automatically when the starter is powered or when the engine fires, respectively. It is named after its inventor, Vincent Hugo Bendix (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_Hugo_Bendix).

I am back from vacation. Installed the new starter, it spun, popped up and engaged the flywheel - which the old starter did not do. Couple of good cranks and my charged battery went flat.
new battery and I was good
was the old starter bad?
