ive got a mid 80's 115 johnny X-flow(flatback) that i helped a friend rebuild.the starter bendix looks to be too small in diameter as its not engaging the flywheel correctlly.it is a 10 tooth bendix,is the 9 tooth dia. larger?im not familiar with these V4 motors as i am the V6,are there two different size flywheel/starter combos for these?

not that im aware of,all got 10 teeth and I got a lot of them.Never saw a different flywheel either except the dual pack and single pack ones are the only difference they will swap out and crank over but the ignition will not work right.Try a different v-4 starter and bendix somthings not right.

Sure what is the model # of your motor?

A 1985=385949 Drive Assy Or ARCO DV372 Drive gear

Factory parts you look up here or on BRP web site

That drive looks like it may be off a V6, hard to tell from picture. But something not right thats for sure.

if still have the old starter take off the cog, might be a number under it.
that is definitely not right.

Had one come in with the same issue and starter, when customer mounted he put the wire retaining clip between the starter and block instead of outside the starter. I have also seen them come in with a thin washer on lower mount bolt to shim closer.

funny thing is,the starter that was on the motor when we tore it down fit the exact same way!i will double check the mounting tonight.ill get the DV372 gear on the way ,at least ill have a spare if it turns out to be something else!

well that means you must of fitted the starter wrong.
do you still have the old start / of so put that back to see if it fits ?

the one on the left is a older v-4 or a 3 cyl starter drive.Your black flywheel is a late 80s are you using a aftermarket starter? saw a few of them do the same *ucking thing should not need no shims to install a starter no way no how.?

totally agree with racervboat, shouldn't need any spacers for the starter.
but I have seen people struggle putting a starter on for some un-known reason.

Mounting starter was never an issue, checked it. Many times.remounted with org. drive gear and its doing its job, still has gap, but works.problem o have now is themotorruns like crap, dropping cylinders, pretty sure its the stator, will test today. Have another flywheel be. believe it measures the same as the black one?

1982 its a long long time since I saw a bad stator on a v-4 check your spark more than likely a bad power pack,or bad grounds and connections?

Are you sure the black flywheel is the right one, did you try the old flywheel. I have never had a poured in magnets flywheel go bad.

35 years and afew years ago had a 1985 90 hp v-4 just rebuilt it was running on a stand only for a few minutes and it just died? swaped a stator, trigger, pacs harness still no spark on all four what the hell is worng with this it was running and just died????? well only thing left was the flywheel changed it and fired up instantly ill be damned could not see anything wrong with it screwdriver stuck to every magnet strong as well as the center hub pulled my hair out on that one for a while?

if the black one is a newer single pack one it will not start it will just back fire and miss

Switched out paks for a used set,ran better, but went back to sputtering, died. Got it idling better by moving the enricher around, problem now seems to be on the fuel side, as I can make the motor run well by moving the valve, but leaving it in one spot , it will go back to rough idle no matter where it is.i checked spark on all four while running, good spark.checked fuel pressure, 3-4lbs on cheap gauge.gonna pull carbs

skeeter91

Pulled&inspected the carbs, everything looks good. I did change the flywheel out .motor still acts the same , this little motor is driving me nuts!

update for any who may give a crap! milled the mounting tabs down .05 on my mill, worked perfect! as aside note, after inspecting and cleaning the arbs twice, i installed another set, cleaned, new needles, seats and floats, motor is going through break in now, runs great!original carbs are in the trash never to aggravate anyone ever again!

i gave up trying to figure out wtf a couple of weeks ago, just wanted to get it fixed and outta my place, i gotta rebuild a motor for my venture basser and this POS was holding everything up! best i can figure, on the original carbs, one or more of the idle passages had a blockage or something, once i put the other set on and the motor ran and idled, i didnt care, lol! as for the starter mounting, i have no idea why there was so much clearance, but its fixed now!
