View Full Version : would you replace a good running stator for this?

On one of my motors, (I have a mix of Mercs and Evinrudes), the motor runs like a champ, but some of the stator wires, where they connect to the switch box have developed that "rubbery" feel, AND on at least one of the stator wires, a chunk of insulation is gone. I taped it up and it's still running fine. Sooo do you replace it based on these worn items, or do you use it till it stops running right? What do you guys do?

Liquid electrical tape works if the wire is not rotted.

Unless I see a sign of imminent failure, I run my stuff till it's dead.

If your running 30 miles offshore or going to a 4 day event where you don't want any issues then change it. Otherwise just keep an eye on it. If more insulation falls off, it's probably time for a new one.

Freshwater you can get with it, salt is a different story... bare wires with 300v and you will get stranded. best fix is to solder-splice new ones close to the stator and epoxy the old wires and splices to the bottom of the stator so the old wires cant bend and detiorate any more..Dave.

I would do what i had to do to have faith in it. If it was me i would probably splice new wires onto it if i could to avoid the cost of replacing it if that was possible, if that is not feasible due to condition or simply room, i would replace it. If (when) it fails you buy one anyway, if i put it off with my luck the cost of the part would double and i would still end up buying one.

If the wire conductor itself is good and not corroded, snip the end of the connector off and slide an appropriate size heat shrink tubing over the whole wire, old insulation and all up as far as you can get, then use a hot air gun to shrink it, and solder a new eyelet on.

I like the heat shrink tubing with the resin sealer inside. It will ooze out both ends sealing it up.

Wouldn't suggest this if the wire conductor is corroded though. And it is just a band aid.
