What does the cylinder rounding tool look like? Are they home made shop pieces or are they made at a factory?

Anybody could build one if they had a mill and lathe. Lot easier to call Michael Clemmons at Outback Outboards and buy one. They're not that much

I cut a old piston in halve and use a hammer pry weadge and Wack it.....Heat don,t matter. but helps

Couldn't you just use a 3.5" Quality Exhaust pipe expander and not crank on it so hard?
What part will go out of round the most? I'm guessing the top half being it doesn't have any backing like the bottom half.

Just for a quick example. This is only $20

You don't quite understand the concept. The part you posted will apply pressure evenly to the entire circumference. The idea is to straighten out of round bores. To do so you have to apply pressure where you want it, not the whole thing. The tool is available from Outback Outboards.

I've built them for years .
First built by Jim Ruck then I copied them after Jim stopped making them I've sold many of them for straightening all 3.500" bored nickle or steel .

How out of round do these fix? Had a 2.0 for years that has had terrible leak down numbers even with new rings and suspect the bores are out of round.

Anyone care to share their photos of this contraption.

On the crossflow motors we make little wedges to push cylinder back straight, then drill 2 holes in the wedge to help keep it cool, works like a charm. Cyl are thin on them so all of them warp up top.

Do cylinders mostly become out of round on the top third where there isn't any backing

Jay Smith

Yes , I've bent bores round that were WAY outta round , I strive for 1/2 thou egged thats my target ...

I find when a bore is egged the tool will only work if it pushes on opposed sides with a dial bore gauge find the side that is narrow instal the tool and push , that will widen the small side and narrow the large side of the hole , think about it like a clock measure with dual bore gauge from 12-6 then from 3-9 that will tell you what side is narrow and you need to push the picture of the muffler expander can't work I've straightened a zillion with the same tool for 15 years ...

That's sweet, you got some talent to make a tool like that. The Ferrari red was a good touch.

That works great for those extra stubborn cylinders

The stubborn ( steel ) one's stay pretty round . It's them weak **** plated ones ya gotta push around .. ;)
From above the ex port to the deck they grow big along the thrust face because the wall parallel to the wrist pin doesn't have the integrity to stay put and caves in towards the piston ... but they are light .. LOL
One of my friends asked .. what the **** ya doin . It's got a bent hole , so I'm pushin it straight . Why don't ya just hone it , or be a white man and bore it next size .. can't , it plated and only .007 thick . So I'm gonna get it as straight as possible and then touch it up with this set of stones I paid $450.00 for . Boy , you is a fool . Yea I know , worse part is , I can push it to less than .001 , hone it to .0001 and then if I go set that POS out in the sun ... it'll move .002 in what ever direction it wants ..

I was speaking of the porta power you posted, like to know the application you use it for:D;) Seems that would be a little harsh on the soft cylinders. Or is there a special technique you use, please share:rolleyes:

Welp , first ifin ya don't know how many times the block has been around the block , ( or even wiff-in 10' of Krazy ) :p . Ya drop the lobster claw in a condom and slide that puppy in the bore , dry ...

#1) Then ya close the valve on the power-pac .
#2) Apply even pressure
#2 K) See footnote at bottom
#3 Measure and repeat until satisfactory result's are established . :nonod: :D

Footnotes :
2K ) (K)razy , put a big cheater extension over the little handle and pump vigorously.

I think I'll just send you my motors, that way i can't go krazyman on them. plus i might need an end on my offshore ram, cross pin is frozen in there.

I don't get how you separated that V6 in half. I might have to take a closer look at mine.

Just tap gently with a rubber mallet, and it will come apart.
