70 Hp. Yamaha / Missing Serial # Tag / Big Deal for re-sale?

Listed my 70 hp. Yamaha for sale locally.
reason for selling it is to put a short shaft SST 60 on.

The Yamaha runs great, however just way to long of a set up.
Had a fella drive 180 miles to look at it Saturday.

Started it for him etc. and he was very pleased.
He being a Yamaha fan noticed un-benounced to me
that it has NO serial number tag on the clamp.

He started getting real figgity and explained his discomfort.
I said I understood, and also explained I bought it as is with
a clean title and have been very happy with it.

He called the local dealer and they told him its worth
far less due to the missing tag.

I'm like fella... this engine is from the 80's
It's not like it's a 2017 with a removed tag.

Now that I know what I'm looking for you can clearly see
it's missing in the first picture.



Any thoughts from the Scream & Fly Family?
Big Deal?
Affect Resale?
Etc? Etc?
Value for a good clean 70 Hp. Yamaha?

I think it depends on the state you boat in some check but I have never been checked.

He was all worried as well how he would insure it.
I have never had insurance ask me for serial numbers on anything insured.

Was thinking the same, wanted to get community feed back to in the event I was unaware of something.

I even offered to let him speak with the dealer we bought it from. Didn't matter he was weirded out.

As clean as that engine is wish you were closer. I bought a baja with a 200 merc from Short's in De the motor had no tag never had an issue. I went back and forth with them on it and they never did anything.

I would look it over for numbers. Any yammi guru's know? Most motors and boats have two places they are numbered.

Look on freeze out plug if it hasn't been rebuilt? Small freshwater yamaha 2 stroke is like gold around here.
