Just curious. I see you are looking for an offshore. Why an offshore as opposed to a regular 20" 280. I will be looking for a 280 soon and was just trying to learn something.

The last time I saw him he had one foot in the grave and one on a bannana peel. Its on Merrick rd.

Electra -
Pit Bull is right about them - I bought my OMC 40 from them in 1993, and they were the cheapest game in town. That guy Sy is a real mean dude though.

On the offshore the midsection is different. it has the exhaust leaving the midsection instead of the fishing boat looking one.

Palm Harbor claims to be the largest Merc Hi Perf dealer in the nation. Also Crown Liesure marine in Gulfport Miss deals a lot in the go fast goods. Both should have a website but, I will post the phone #'s as soon as I can find them.

How close are you to the border, I got a great deal on a left over 02 by going about 30 miles into Canada (something about the exchange rate and how they are priced up there per the market). Also the offshore mid is cool but allot more money than the sport (which has exhaust relief holes above the cavitation plate) during my checking it was at least another grand to 1500 more than the sport.
One question, I thought you just rebuilt your 260 again, why are you thinking 280??. Good luck in your search, Scott

Thats good info too.
Thank you

If you have ever broke a sport midsection and lost a lower unit you will never buy a sport again. I have and I never will again. Midsections take a lot of abuse in rough water even on small boats. The offshore look a lot nicer, sound nicer and are much stronger.

Brad what are you refering to when you are talking about breaking a sport midsection. The current "Sport" has the same bracket with seperate trim pump as the "Offshore", the exhaust and housing are different, the supporting clamp/bracket are not. The "Sport" does not have the weaker all-in-one bracket/ram/pump unit used on the fishing motors.
On this subject, one of the locals here has a euro STV that he bought in 95 and put a 260 offshore on it. The mid/exhaust housing kept cracking around the exhaust outlet and after a year or so of trying to weld it back together, he took it off and replaced the housing with the standard (sport style) housing and hasn't had any cracking since then;)

The Off shore mid is stronger. The reason for the open exhaust is to keep water from spraying up the back of the engine during Off Shore racing. It sounds cool as well. Why they even make Hi Perf engines with closed housings is beyond me. I guess it keeps the cost down.

The sports will crack right above the vent plate. I have seen at least 4 that were broke that way. Basically the the lower unit is trying to tear itself off the midsection. I have since learned from Mercury Racing to always check the lower nuts on the mid/lower unit connection. I was told if not torqued tight they can cause a vibration and crack the mid. The worst that can happen is what happend to me on a twin engine setup. Running about 70mph and making a sweeping turn, when one engine starting freewheeling. I stopped and thought I must have lost the prop. Raised the motors and one CLE was gone!!!I mean clean off. Tore off above the stud mounts/nuts on the mid. Lost a good Mazco prop and the CLE which were never recovered.

I guess I will make sure everything is tight (I kind of figured that it was part of the standard program anyway, even with a offshore mid!!) especially at the lower unit;)

If the offshore exhaust is down in the water during long periods of idling in a no wake zone is it more prone to plug fouling than the regular 280 sport with the above water exhaust ?
Also is the regular 280 sport exhaust more restrictive than the offshore exhaust ? In other words do both motors make the same power ?

You are absolutly correct its just like checking your prop shaft nut it has to be done. I know being somewhat new to this Hypo part of boating I already paid that piper on that piece. It was all my fault for not checking the nuts and bolts. Luckily I didnt wreck and get hurt or hurt anyone.

The hp is the same for both motors, The os section is desingd to keep water from spraying up the back of the engine when rough water.

The last time I went on Merrick road, Electra was for sale. Maybe it was just the building for sale?

How about Coty marine right in jersey? Bought a 225 promax from him a couple of years ago. Even if you dont buy one from him there is just something special about standing in a wharehouse with 500 merc outboards that makes you giddy.

The 280 Race motors are real bad to foul plugs "period". Don't know whether it's the plugs (champion) or the motors. I do know I wouldn't leave the dock without a spare set of plugs (12).

Call Matt Riddle at Performance Plus Marine in Ala. 256-386-7001 i think he has a 03 there and for the plug it is the champion that do not work there is an update plug my motor isnt here but it is the NKG plug that will stop the fouling, the offshore housing does sound good and with the offshore housing you get the ROS ecu box that is the only way to go do not get the CON box to many problems, and as soon as you get it make wure it has top pinned piston and if it dont have them changed under warranty, then you will have a great motor, and a chopper prop no thur hub my advice on the 280, oh and they have external trim pump mine is in boat, if i was spending this kid of money i would look at the 250xs or 250xb and change the gears to a 1.62 and get better fuel mileage and more warranty and oil enjection i knoiw on the bass boats the 250 loaded run as fast as the 280 loaded but not light load thanks strokerga

Lake X tells me that there isn't a direct cross to NGK and NOT to change plugs (from champion) in the 2.5 Offshore Race engines (FYI). Let me know what NGK you're running and I'll ask them.

sorry it has taking this long but my motor is not here and i had to look this up the plug upgrade for the 2.5 280 is NGK 4495 BPZ8H N 10 that is what Mercury is putting in the motor from my understanding and telling people to change too, i know i just went thur break in and running double oil and no problem with plugs, after the break in time i changed them, and i am running the 8400 rpm limiter too, thanks strokerga
