I'm writing this to let you know my experience with a guy named AJ. I went and bought a promax 225 with the understanding that it had a full powerhead rebuild 20 hours ago. Feeling like this guy seemed decent enough I believed him and didn't do a compression check while it was on the stand. Bought it and brought it home. After a month of working out little bugs and having an issue with it dying under load I did a compression check and found the spark plug below in #6. Fearing the worst I pulled the head and found out he reused them. Weird thing was that the sleeve and piston top looked brand new. Called him and told him what I found, he then told me the guy he bought it from rebuilt it, not him and he would send me a new pair of heads. I pulled the bottom end and inspected everything else and it all seemed ok. I went and bought a new pair of heads anyways to at least get the motor going. Still was having issues and I ran out of ideas so I took it to a shop. Mechanic fixed the issue and was out testing it. Got it up t=on plane at about 3k rpm's when it started making a noise and loosing power, he shut it off right away and got towed back in. Pulled the head and this is what he saw. Looks like the wrist pin needle bearings gave out and piston #6 ( same one with the junk head) exploded. Crank is now froze and who knows what other damage it did. Called him back, told him everything that happened, He told me that I'm making assumptions and its a used motor with no warranty and to basically F off. He then told me that if I need any parts I can buy them off of him. Later in the conversation when I asked if he is still going to send me new heads he said he doesn't have any.
I have people that can verify that I haven't even gotten a half hour of run time on it.
His name is AJ
He lives in Beloit, WI
Operates out of a shop
Claims to rebuild motors
And yes, that is what's left of the piston

Did the injector on #6 ever get checked out from last month?

Thats a bad site to open up and see. Especially at the begining of boating season

Looks like it ran lean, whoever did the rebuild did not go through the fuel system.

Maybe the rebuilder only got the long block?
