Mercury 2001 300X motors. Has anyone else found a better plug than the Champion QL77PP or the NGK BR8HIX plugs for this year motor? I hate the Champions and I do not feel like this number NGK is pulling on the big end as good. Thanks Todd

I have never liked champion plugs but Todd D. and Brent both have told me to use them in the X motors. I get them at our local napa store for around 4 bucks a piece. I must say that I have not fouled one yet and my motor is set very rich.

You are setting the gap on the champions at 0.025 in. (0.64 mm)?

My engine guy told me the same thing. Only use the Champion plugs. I had a buddy that was chasing an idling/stumbling issue for months. He was running NGK plugs. Tried the Champions like my guy said and the motor ran great. Most NAPA stores have or can get them. Sometime they go on sale for under $3.00 dollars.
I have been running them in my motors and no issues.

Really not having a big issue with them, other than at idle sometimes. The NGK's idle better, but do not have the top end of the Champion. I throw new plugs in it about every 4-5 times out. Just was hoping someone found the magic plug.

If you having problem's idle , may want to check your reed block 's. A while back there was few people ,that had that problem. It was, the rubber on the cages was missing .Back when the new -E gas came.
People with the 300X had problem's.And the 225/250 /300XS didn't .But all have the same reed blocks ,but these run's on regular gas and 300X on High Test.

Many of us with x's have the rubber removed from the reed cages. Chris Carson does a fantastic job with this.

That was going to be my next answer you beat me to it . Remove the rubber from the cage .I know a few that has done it with good result.

Also you can play with the opening on the throttle body. We massaged mine a few thousands and it helped a lot.

Br8 or br8hs10 gapped to .028 . Personally if it's an engine that gets run hard(like mine) I run br9, which is a little colder plug. I wouldn't put champions in a lawn mower.

I should not be complaining, I am running 120 with 4 blade Dewalds and 122 with Mercury 5 blade CNC's on totally bone stock 2001 300x's with 75 hours. I have done a ton of set up work to the boat and even added Holley Red pumps to help keep the fuel psi up to the motors better. Was having issues with fuel psi even after replacing pulse pumps and the internal pumps. I believe that issue was do to the extra fuel filter I run in the boat and there are no fuel slosh tanks, so when I get below 1/2 tanks, I had issues with losing psi. After installing the Holley Reds, I have had no issues with fuel psi. The boat runs and performs flawless, but I am always looking for a little more, plus I do get the motors loading up occasionally. I really hate Champions!!!

What motor and year are you running this on? Thanks

I have 2002 X motor and been running the BR8HIX for years. I started using these because of long idle time getting into and out of canal. The BR8HIX does not load down and I can get a full season without any problem. If you are not looking for the big number is there any issues with running the BR8HIX?

Only difference between br8hs and br8hix is irridium center electrode and cost. I run br8 or 9 in my engine on the skater and all my customers/ friends stuff depending on how they use the boat. Alot of idling/ slow speed running with wot once in awhile use the 8's(closest heat range to the factory plugs) otherwise 9's if it gets run hard for long periods of time. Range of engines are basically 300x through all the years, and the modified engines I build using Opti blocks that get ungreened. I'll throw a good tip out there too, get rid of the factory 300x plug wires and go to msd wires. They are still suppression wires but are spiral wound and have half the resistance of the Mercury wires.

If I remember correctly I bought the universal gm cut and fit ends kit 4.3 v6 from 89 and up, and use the Delco est distributor ends.

Magnecor 65131 8.5mm KV85 CN Series Ignition Cable Marine Marine Engines.
These are the wires i ran on my 300X but i am running the champ plug. I have ran magnecor on a lot of turbo cars too they have been a good wire for me.
