Hey new guy .
Looking for some advice on painting my 3 .0 L mid-section and lower unit .
Has my motor all broke down now . Clamp removed from mid and lower from mid .
Exhuast plate pull and idle hole's clean out . Stud's and bolt's clean .

I now need to paint before putting back togather and now I am lost . Never paint before , no more than using a Mercury spray can to do the lower unit (skeg ) .

Been washing and removing all the oils from unit . What paint do i need to use .Has been told from another forum to use Urethane paint . How much do i need and what brand name ?
Plan's on rough it up and prime where need or should i go a diff. route ? Didn't want the paint to be peeling in 6- 12 month's.

Thank's Richard new guy

I have restored and or changed color on a few motas over the recent yrs and I find the new lacquers (some are good up to 500 deg) such as Plasti-coat are easy to work with and the clears help with UV protection. Moeler has match colors for most OBs that are lacquers also. Gary

I've used single stage urethane with epoxy primer underneath

I am going to try some of the tamco companys paints. They seem to have a real good bunch of paints that would be perfect for our motors. www.tamcopaint.com/

I have been using Jamestown Distributors Total Boat products on my daughters Whaler project. Epoxy primer and single stage top coat. Easy to use, no mixing, just thin and spray. Lays down easy, and gives a nice finish. Also fairly inexpensive, and the ship for free with 2-day shipping.

For extra durability use a hardener in the paint. Use a quality automotive single stage. I prefer PPG.

If you're spraying with a real gun PPG U9000 or similar single stage paints are OEM match.

If you're going to rattle can it, the cans of mercury brand "phantom black" are hard to beat. They take about a week to dry completely, but have an extremely hard, shiny finish. Closest thing to a catalyzed single stage I've found.

I used Awlcraft 2000 on a pair of 225 Opti's..... holding up pretty well. 376185

Awlcraft or Axalta MS600.
I just sprayed some controls with MS600 using a Prevail sprayer and got a real nice finish. You could do that to your mid and not even need to learn how to use a spray gun.
Home Depot has Prevails http://www.homedepot.com/p/Preval-9-oz-Complete-Spray-Gun-267/202533738
