At risk of sounding goofy, I use Mercury Parts Express for that sometimes. Just pretend you're looking for a part. Enter the serial number and in the exploded view of certain assemblies it will tell you exactly what the motor is/was. Worked for my 2.4 and a couple others. I was hoping, like you, that someone would chime in with something better. Reckon it ain't gonna be that way.

give me a call and I'll run you numbers. any dealer that is online with merc can give you a history of the motor, If they dont mind doing it. call 727-530-0458 ask for Nat -I'll be here till 5:00 eastern. :D

It's for ordering manuals, I think!!! Well you just select the make then find the Hp your looking for and look up the model No. = Year.
It has'nt let me down yet!
Hope this helps, Alan...

Sorry bout that...
thanks guys, I appreciat the suggestions, and I really appreciate the offer Nat.
If this helps anyone, here is a site that lists modle numbers for a variety of engines. It is in swedish, but has enough pictures to let you find what you are looking for.

Start with "modellguide" to get to the ouboard engines.
