Looking to upgrade to a 90hp.
Looking at:
1987-1997
Mercury 90hp.
Weight 265 Lbs.?
1984-1995
Yamaha 90hp.
Weight 223 Lbs.?
Both are Re-man's, currently rigged with Yamaha
Which has been great and I have nothing against
It or know much about. (Came with boat)
Just always been a Mercury fan.
So if I were to upgrade in power now
Would also be the time to re-brand.
So for the big picture, I would like to know
The pros and cons of both.
Parts availability of both long term.
Etc.etc. etc.
Look forward to your thoughts

Hard to beat a 3cyl Yamaha.

If you are going to run it standard then the Merc, but must be the later style with the drop on cowl.
Lots of low down grunt, great economy, hold its head against the Yamaha in just about all conditions
If you are going to run it hard or fast or want to do modifications then go for the Yamaha

Any particular year you like for the ( Yamaha 90 hp. 2 Stroke )?
Any mods you like for a nice warm up, not a maintenance nightmare?
One item I would like to do right away is have the midsection
modified to a 15"

I am a Yamaha man 100%,
But, If the hull is heavy and or will be loaded most times, one thing to consider is the Merc has quite a few more cubes and a lower gear.
If that's not the case, medium to light hull, not carrying a huge load. The Yammi is flawless. If you have any intention of tinkering, only Yamaha. To shorten the mid is no biggie.

My hull is 940 Lbs. As is, Rigged with fuel.
with the current 70 hp. It does 40 mph with
my wife and I.
Thoughts were, 90hp. 15" mid.
Low water pickup if possible and
Set a better (x) dimension.
Possibly warm it up, but still a daily
Little hot rod, not a maintenance nightmare.

Definitely the Yammie.
It will fly on that setup.

Cougarman, I think it's unanimous for the Yamaha on that boat.
SW Michigan here also, what lakes do you run that boat on?

No clue, I can turn a 24p Yamaha drag mid 7000rpm. Never seen a dyno.

That boat would probably float a V4 Yamaha and that would take it to a new level.
About 80 pounds heavier than a 90 Yamaha and you could get that difference down. My short V4 Yamaha weighs 298lbs vs a stock 90 at 260 lbs.
One thing you want is a fresh water motor. Yamahas do have worse corrosion issues. Pulling a head will reveal a lot.

Mr. Demeanor,
I have read your entire thread over the past year.
You clearly have put your dues in not only with the Yamaha, but also with the small boat in front of it.
The more I research, along with the responses to my own thread the 90hp. Is spoken very highly of in regards to
Possibly one of Yamaha's best engines.
In your opinion, other than just speed.
Inline-3 90hp vs. V-4 115hp what are the advantages
of either?
Just looking at the whole picture from
Dock manners, to idle, stress of either,
Obviously V-4 has less stress with the added
Cylinder, Etc. Etc.
Thanks

Yamaha.
Or Tohatsu.
But the Yamaha is the best engine in that class.

Not sure if you've found this thread, but if you're looking for a short mid it sounds like the 1980s Mariner could be a good donor.

374652DO NOT GO WITH A MARINER MID. It is not worth the trouble that it takes to get the water pump in the Mariner mid. A cut stock is the way to go. Green boat is a mariner mid, yellow boat has a cut 20" Bring me the whole rig, I'll fix you up.

Yamaha.
I had a Yamaha 90 that was well worked. In retrospective all that work should have been done to a Yamaha V-4 (100-140). On your boat - it would be another level! It would be the engine that boat deserves!

Jon In short, theres no replacement for displacement. You may make a 90 into a 115hp engine but it will never accelerate like a 115 just like my V4 that is probably 175-200hp will never pull like a 200hp V6. The fun factor will be huge with the V4.
The V4 also has a better gearcase and you can bolt a V6 gearcase to it. Everything below the powerhead on a V4 is the same as a V6 so you have a lot more parts out there. Plus you can always drop a V6 powerhead on it :-)

I've got a couple of those yamaha 90's on a 22 foot whaler. They work great but they are very loud for little motors.

The other thing about the yamaha 90 is the gear cases are very rare. 115 you can find.

Will the Mariner lower fit on the Yamaha mid.? I know the shaft and splines are not the same but would the case bolt on?
