I am removing my nose cone because the boat handles better and is faster without one.

My question is what is the best way to remove it so its stock and looks good also.

I removed one once, what a pian in the ass. I wound up gutting the case and using a tourch to melt the epoxy that held it on. good luck getting that gack out of the stock water pick ups

I removed a land - n - sea cone with a mapp torch and a chisel. It was messy toxic and it stunk....better wear a resperator. :D

I had a customer send one back to Bob`s to get removed..It looks OK, cost him $150 I think..

Luckily two of the water pickups are still there so maybe just remove one or two more. I think im going to take a hammer and wack it a couple of times. Hopefully it just brakes off,it is cracked there already.

Thanks for the suggestions;)

why not find a person you trust with a stock lower wanting to up grade and trade them even.

Bob, Mine was cracking off too. I just put a big screwdriver on the crack and gave a few smacks and off it came. Getting the epoxy off is the tough part. Heat seems to be the only thing that softens it. If not you end up gouging the aluminum when you try to scrape at it. Anyway I don't know if it's worth $150. It took me about 3 or 4 hours to scrape all that crap off- someone put a combination of epoxy and automotive bondo on mine.

I am going to send it off to Bobs and also have a new skeg installed with a tork tab:)

Thanks again, Bob

I have a nice new Snap-On air chisel. And I would have loved to let her rip on the lower unit:D But I do want to use it on the boat again;)

So I took VectorPat's advice and I already dropped it off at UPS. Its on its way to Bobs. They have done a few before the way it sounded when I called them. He said they could remove it and install a new one at no extra charge for removal. I told him to just remove it and replace the skeg with a tork tab and I will be happy

Bob,
Some mechanic you are having to send your stuff out to get worked on:D I could have wacked that thing off for ya last Sun for ya in no time and that $150 would of felt good in my pocket:D

I can see how you would have removed it too...LOL

You probably would have rigged it to the back of your hot bike and used it for a wheelie bar till the thing was wore off:rolleyes: :D

That would have worked or I could do it the way I removed my first cone.I went out on Minnetoka late in the season and they had all the markers out.Was doing about 70 and had just put the hammer down and wham, hit a rock bar out in the middle of the bay.Not only removed the cone but ripped the transom through the mounting hole from top to bottom.:( Did a complete 360 jet ski style but stayed in the boat:eek:

My transom is real solid now but I dont think I would want the insurance claim:(

Yea.. the gear case at the rumble was a once nose coned case... It had an older style L&S. Removing it didnt gain or loose me anything but ALLOT of pain in the A$$.. I carefully ground all the epoxy down to the alloy then worked with a knife, chizzle, small small dremel bits and after a couple three hours it came off..... :D :D

Were you running the cone on your Mate? What kinda speeds were you running?

Like I told the guy at Bob's, my nose cone wasnt installed profesionally. They wanted to remove it and install one the right way. They figured I would gain some speed then. But after running my dads stock one on my Baja, that is what I want.

Randy P. suggested adding a tork tab to it. And the factory skeg was ground real short. So i'm having that fixed and a tab installed

When I ran a 15 foot check mate I didnt run a cone.
My guess is your under 70mph and lower enging heights so a cone will do no good.
Yes a torque tab will help handeling.

Accually I am real close to 80 now, and it runs best 2" below the pad

hmm
Then I would run a cone just to make sure you alwasy have good water pressure. Try the Bobs sportsman cone.. you will love it!

That is what was on my lower unit. When I ran my dads, I ran that sucker all the way to the top just for kicks. It accually performs better down about 3" from the top. I had great water pressure and no overheating even when I had it up all the way. Although I dont run all day like that. Remember, I just one of them crazy water skiers. I just like to go fast once in a while:)
