I thought it would be easier for those that just wanted to follow particular boats or stories to create separate threads for each one.

This is Mark's Talon that just got finished up here a couple of weeks ago and he is rigging himself. So here are some pictures and I will post Mark's progress on the rigging.

These are pictures the day it left with Mark and his wife.

Thank you, Karen

Sneeze?????? You lost me there.

We've been making progress. Finished all the steering, dash and console stuff and should have the rest of the mechanicals done this weekend then I start on the electrical and buttoning up everything. Hoping to get wet by the end of the month if work allows.

He is referring to the mist that an STV will give out the front at low speeds and the answer is no. The boat looks great-looking forward to running with you guys:thumbsup:

Like Joe said, no the Talon's do not sneeze. We call it "spitting'' over here for the STV's.

Here are some "in flight" rigging photos. Since I only get weekends, for the most part, to work on this it's going slower than expected but it's getting there. Most of the rear section is done, just waiting on a harness to button up the motor connections, install hose, etc. Space planning for the power distribution was "fun" and I'm going to dress it a bit more but the layout works. Since I have 5 main power drops, Battery, Motor, Power Steering, Jack Plate and House power I went with 600A buss bars with the motor and battery sharing a common terminal so power isn't going to be an issue. The Starboard side houses the power steering pump and oil reservoir, the Port side is all about electrical. I wanted to minimize the number of holes in the rear but with needing to route jack plate power, jack plate height gauge and a sonar transducer cable it necessitated it's own drop but I found a really well made waterproof SS clamshell from Scanstrut. http://scanstrut.com/products-22/electrical-accessories

Work moves to the front this week to dress in all the wiring and interconnects.

Update - 4/8/2017. RIGGING COMPLETE !!!!!

Of course, as I was doing all the final checks and running the motor for the first time last weekend the Simrad decided to lose its mind. It's back at Navico and I should have a replacement next week. In the mean time I have Vesselview Mobile which explains why I have a Ram mount rigged to hold my phone.

Planning on doing the shake down run tomorrow but I'm going to limit myself since the only gauges the mobile app provides is speed, tach, water temp and voltage. And I still need to do the first hour break in running so the motor will stay lower and the trim level or tucked a bit. No top speed runs till I get some seat time.

Thanks guys.

Now I need to decide whether to do a simple cockpit cover or a full cover. Even sitting under a carport the dust and pollen is a problem. The interior will be covered, I just need to decide if that's enough.

I'm also planning on taking it over to Chris Cruz for some graphics. Not doing a full paint job, just graphics topped with clear. He's already seen pictures and says he has some ideas that can stay within my budget (<$2000) but make it pop so I need to consider protection for that too. Chris is a true artist, I love his work.

Nothing this elaborate, just an example. I'm staying in the gray palet, not planning on adding any other colors. The one below was done on a base yellow gel coat but I believe he cleared the entire boat, I don't remember for sure.

Nice job rigging, and beautiful boat! Your dash and controls are very tasteful.

Have you weighed it yet? Did Todd give you a target for CG?

Can't wait to see how it runs. Nice work, nice ride.

Oh, and you can take the break-in requirement sticker off the cowl now...:D

We did weight the boat before it left the factory. Boat, motor, jackplate, fuel tank and interior weighed 1963 lbs., 517 front and 1446 rear.

372161372162

I added somewhere between 150 and 200 lbs between the power steering, battery, wiring cables, etc. to maintain the CG I mounted the power steering, oil tank and battery as far forward as possible and balanced the weight with a slight bias toward the port side to counter act my 200 lbs in the drivers seat. With 30 gallons of fuel I'm estimating the total weight to be ~2300 lbs.

Initial running will be with a 14.5 x 32 Drag 4 built to Todd's specs. Todd is also getting some additional props made by Mercury that I'll test with once it's broken in and I get some seat time.

And the break in tag has been removed ;)

Way cool. Is there any way you can obtain and post the location of each strap to the back of the sponsons at the running surface? I have an Excel spreadsheet that will calculate CG based on your weights and the location of the straps.

Exciting times! And good job on ugly sticker removal...

the tie down is 11" from the outside of the transom at its widest point and 15" from the inside of the sponson.

OK, I'm looking for the front to rear dimension. So your rear straps are essentially at the running surface, (maybe 3" back, due to transom angle?) can you measure from the transom to the inlet of the tunnel where the front strap was? That would be very helpful.

I just noticed, is there a notch in there? How far forward does that go?

Thanks!

Just got back from the lake, everything checked out great except the steering. I think I've got some air in the line because under hard load it gets nearly impossible to turn to the left and it's a power assisted system. Once you back down a bit it's 1 finger smooth. I have a direct line to a tech at UFlex so I'll be calling him Monday morning.

All in we are thrilled, I love the way the boat runs and everything else worked perfectly. In fact, I was trying to be good but I looked down and was doing an effortless and boring 80.

I spoke to UFlex today and they are sure the problem is the pressure they have the Masterdrive set to. Since they have an OEM relationship with Mercury they are stepping up and exchanging the Masterdrive for the Mercury system, No Charge! It runs at 800 lbs to support the big Verados, the Masterdrive is set to 500 lbs.

For reference, Masterdrive and surfacing applications don't mix, they thought it would work on the Talon but since it didn't they are stepping up and replacing it. Now that's customer service!!!

Glad they stepped up to rectify your issue. You will definitely notice the difference!

How is your system currently wired, did they use the Mercury kit to wake the power steering up when it sees engine RPM like a Verado? Just curious to see if you had a manual circuit or if it was tied to be triggered automatically by the engine.

Bet you can't wait to get back to the water!

Ok, I've tried 4 times to reply and every one throws a database error so maybe the 5th will be a charm.....

The Masterdrive has it's own control panel that's triggered from the ignition. From there you turn it on and off and select the boost mode. The system they are putting together for me is a Mercury system but they rebrand it Powertech. I don't know if they have included a similar feature for adapting it to motors that don't have the interface needed for the Mercury control module but if they don't it's easy to trigger the system on with ignition then use a toggle switch to turn the pump on and off.

Mark,

Go on E-bay and look at the pontoon covers. They are very cheap and being a rectangle shape do a nice job fitting over small cats. I have two of them on my STV under a car port and it works really well for the 150.00 that I have in them. Joe at precision quoted me 1600.00 for the stv, 2000 for the lcb, and 2600 for the skater. Thats a lot of toon covers.

I've been talking to Joe @ Precision and a cockpit cover is in the $700 range so I figured a full cover was more than twice. I'll check out the toon covers, thanks!

Update:

Friday a box showed up from UFlex with a full Mercury power steering system down to the proper replacement bulkhead fittings. We got the Masterdrive system out of the boat Saturday and finished the Mercury installation Sunday. My first impression is the Mercury system is much more refined. The motor package is smaller, quieter and has an automatic sensing system that ramps the pressure up and down as demand changes. The system bled much faster and with a final bleed from the rear fittings the system was powered up, charged and bled in less than 1/2 hr and is ultra smooth through its full range of motion with fingertip control.

Considering this system is powering John's 22 Talon with a 400R both me and UFlex are confident the issues I saw when the boat is on top of the water and surfacing the prop will be gone. Since the system I have is exactly what Mercury sells for non-Verado power steering, right down to the UFlex SilverSteer ram it's exacly as a dealer would deliver power steering on an Optimax so I should be golden regarding any warranty issues as well.

There is one thing you need to be aware of, the Optimax harness doesn't include the power steering interface. This interface sends a signal when you turn the ignition on (purple lead) then senses when the motor is running and sends a signal to the pump to turn on. To support the pump you have 2 options, wire up the Mercury adapters which require you separate the alternator charging terminal from the main battery feed and run an additional power line back to a battery isolator (included in the kit) or simply cut off the end of the 2 wire plug that plugs into the pump and wire the purple wire to ignition on and the blue/white lead to a switched 12v power source. I reused a toggle I was using for the Stereo since it can be turned on and off with its power button and doesn't need a separate power toggle. If anyone is interested in how to wire up this interface just ask, I'll walk you through it.

Obviously it's not a done deal until I get the boat on the water next weekend and test but I'm thrilled with the way UFlex stepped up and with how well the system feels after installation. One other added benefit for anyone considering this is the Mercury package or the PowerTech rebadged UFlex system is actually no more expensive than the Uflex Masterdrive or SeaStar P/A power steering systems when you add it all up and I believe it's a superior product. And one more thing, it should be compatible with an unbalanced side ram system if I decide to upgrade to that in the future.

After a couple of aborted attempts I finally got back out to properly test the new Mercury power steering as well as a new Pro Max prop and learned a few very good lessons, use the proper steering, do not, under any circumstances run a Mercury SSR hybrid hub in a non Mercury prop and make sure you have everything level when you measure drive height.

Running the proper height with a normal Merc Racing solid hub in a lab prepped Pro Max literally transformed the way the boat runs. I set the height at a 1 7/8" (laser measured) and left the drive perfectly level from my measurement session because I'm still without a trim gauge (will get a new VesselView Link next week).

The lake conditions were far from optimal, 15+ mph wind, 2 - 3' chop with whitecaps and some cross chop.

From idle the boat popped up on plane with ease and settles into a nice 60 mph cruise @4000 rpm with very impressive throttle response. A quick bump to 4600 settles in at 70 and it's barely working hard. The boat eats up the chop and runs about 5% faster into the wind, obviously packing more air, exactly the opposite from what I'm used to. I love learning a new boat :)

I didn't do any speed runs, just cruised around between 60 - 70 and love the way it handles. The steering issue is resolved, the Mercury system is well up to the task, it works perfectly. The boat turns so nice and the Pro Max really bites through the turns and accelerates out of them hard, I really like the way the prop works.

Overall the boat is pretty much dialed in so once I get the electronics worked out we're ready to make some runs. I have 2 weeks on the road starting Monday but when I get back we're going to get all the break in hours done and start enjoying this wonderful boat.

NICE PAIR

I did one of the 21' pontoon covers for about $70 and it works great. Still going to do a cockpit cover for traveling.

Best $70 I've spent so far. It isn't the prettiest cover out there but the elastic around the bottom holds it tight and a few strategically placed straps keep it from flapping in the breeze.

loving the boat but damn, it's hot out there this time of year and as you can see, the weather was already starting to build. About 2 hours after we left the sky's opened up. At least the lake levels are getting better.
