Opinions on EGT gauges...good...bad...unnecessary?

Just wanted a few opinions on egt gauges before I drill 2 more holes into the dash of my euro... I'm rigging the boat with a 2.5 L merc hipo 245hp carb motor, the boat came with 2 gaffrig EGT gauges with probes uninstalled. Wondering if it's worth it to install them? I'll be mostly lake cruising but also drag racing it a few times a year.

They're great to monitor if something is going wrong. But don't tune strictly by them. Once get tune right then note what your ideal temps are and if they start changing shut her down in a hurry. To be honest I feel the change before I notice the gauge, just me. I had them and after a few melt downs without seeing it I swapped mine for two temp gauges.
