Hello all..A question for a few old school OMC mechanics out there.I am a proud owner of a 1997 50 HP Johnson SPL which I run on the back of a 21' Pontoon for pleasure.. I've rebuilt the powerhead with all new OEM parts, I had an issue afterwards with fuel delivery. A friend of mine and a local mechanic sold me two 1997 50 HP carbs that he had rebuilt. I was in a hurry and thought I would re-build the originals later. I think I'm running a bit lean according to the head and plug color. So my question is can anyone advise me on the standard high speed orifice (Jet) size for this motor? I can no longer read the numbers on the original carb jets (someone had removed them in the past without the correct tool). Parts manual states 55D or 49D that's quite a spread. Are the jets in this motor air or fuel jets? Is the top carb jetted differently than the bottom?Thank you in advance..Regards

Parts listing shows 49D for the 40 hp and 55D for the 50 hp. Same for both 1996 and 1997. If the jet was buggered with the wrong tool that can restrict flow.

The mains are fuel jets and the idle jets should be adjustable needles.

Hi all,
Thanks again for your replies.. I've yet to post pics of the carbs, however the boat is out of storage and will post soon.. Which brings me to my next question.
I removed the VRO last year and replace it with 2 different styles of fuel pumps for the purpose of testing. The parts manual recommends "0438557", which mounts to the block but does not use the upper cylinder/port for pulse. A pulse hose is needed between the lower pulse port and the pump, which in my opinion is a long reach for a pulse hose. Can anyone out there send me a part number for a definitive replacement for the VRO? Its a 1998 50 HP SPL. I've read many posts and blogs in reference to fuel pumps, but would like a pump that has been tested and used for this specific motor.
Thank you
Regards
