View Full Version : WAY Too Much Water Pressure

Did an impeller change and went with a new kit for my 200XRi and Sportmaster, so everything is new. I'm hitting 30 lbs. at around 5,000 and the needle runs plum off the chart and wraps around to the underside of the zero stop when I run over 6,000. Talked to the PO and found out he had installed a small diameter water tube from a stock 200 case and thought maybe the kit should have been for that instead of a Sporty. Problem is, we looked at both kits, and the Sporty housing we went with matched what was in it. The only difference we could see was the hole in the case which was smaller for the Sporty than a regular case, and again, that's what matched what came out of it before the impeller change.
I never thought I'd be worried about too much pressure, but this has me a little bit concerned, especially since I don't have a temperature gauge. I know the overheat horn works, but I hate to rely on that. Any thoughts?

Stuck poppet valve possibly....30 is not out of the question when running fast.

Install a temp gauge . Easy insurance !

I plan to, but it might take some looking to find one that matches the other gauges. Guess I could just hook up a generic until I find a match. Like you said, easy insurance, but that doesn't solve my problem.

Poppet is on starboard side of the motor down low. May have 3 or 2 bolts holding it on. Has a spring and a plunger hooked to a diaphram that reacts to water pressure at speed. Rubber parts get old and hard and it stops opening and you get the excessive pressures. Plug in you serial # and see what parts you have to replace. One site I use for parts diagrams is http://www.boats.net

Thanks man, I appreciate that.

Free bird I had the same too much pressure problem last year on my 2.5 245 carb motor , but I don't have a poppet valve or thermostats in my motor , just small washers where the stats are supposed to be and nothing under the poppet cover . It buried the water pressure gauge like your is doing so I got a temp gauge and it showed very low temp till August when the water got 90 * . Like you I do not no why But it ran over 7500 rpm a lot and never had a problem so far . That poppet is very easy to take out to inspect , so are the stats . Check them out .

Thanks for the info. Just tracked down my gauges and ordered a temp gauge and hour meter just to balance the gauge layout that's already in the boat. I'll check out the poppet valve tomorrow.

Just for your information free bird , we pulled my powerhead off and found why I had so much water pressure . The tuner water jacket drains were plugged up with rocks so it wouldn't dump the water fast enough creating backpressure of water . That's why it would sit at idle and pee 3ft and at 3000 rpm s my gauge was at 30psi ! All normal now we cleaned it out !!!

That's a good quality impeller, figured it wouldn't hold shape to push that much.
My 1 piece plate plugs on occasion and requires pulling the powerhead, remove pebbles, and run it again. They will build some serious pressure.

Do you have thermostats or were they change out to washers? I know its mainstream to install 1/8" fender washers but I have never had luck with 1/8" over 3k. my pressure does exactly what yours does and when I am over 7k to 8k+ its rocking 50psi's. So I changed them out to 3/8 fender washers and everything has been smooth sailing down around 30 at high rpms and maybe 3 to 5 at idle.
Here's a fuzzy photo from a video i made. you can see i am pushing 40psi's at only 6k, it gets worse quick. I'm assuming this is what our talking about.
Gauge is up top its a 30psi gauge and you can see I am approaching 0 again.

Thanks for the additional input on my output! I did install a temperature gauge, and she's running cool as a cucumber. With that, I haven't done any more checking.

Dem gauges are going in the trash can where they belong.
