I have a pair of 2015 300xs motors that I'm selling. They came from Lake Havasu where they got lots of white hard water stains. Here's some before and after pics.
These are before

These are after. I took off the gearcases and wingplates to clean them.

Those look great!! I've never had mine spotted that bad, and usually CLR does the trick. Can I ask what you did or used?? Great job!!

I use Sno Bol toilet cleaner and a toothbrush. Then Gunk and a toothbrush. Then Dawn and a toothbrush. Then I wax every nook and cranny. Takes about 6 hours each.
wow ! look like they just came out the box !
impresive but just like all your builds and toys !

Use a diluted mixture of muratic acid and water. You will not believe how easy it removes scale and other water deposits.

Gotta be careful with muriatic acid though. It can really mess up an aluminum gearcase.

What are the two screws on the port side of the mid in the "before" picture?

I think you may find that Lime Away works quite well - and is a hell of a lot safer.

Those screws held a bracket that held the transom mounted water pickup hose.

Muratic will eat aluminum faster than you can imagine. It's what is in the toilet bowl cleaner the kids use to make to 2 litre soda bottle bombs with. I only use it on painted surfaces for the most part. It will clean aluminum but you must be diligent and have plenty of water on hand. Do it all the time. Ya gotta be careful not to breath it, nasty stuff but very effective.

Does that kind of residue clog the cooling water passages?

No it doesn't. A lot of states just have a lot of minerals in the water. It's just cosmetic
