If you were building a new 15" 3.0 or 3.? would it be cool in Gray or should it be Black?
Does Gray de-value it upon resale?
Not talking spray can paint either.

I would use whatever looks best on the boat, myself. I'm probably going to go gray because my boat has gray in it already (I bought a Mariner cowl and have a mid to paint.)

Mariner cowls usually sell for more used than Mercury because there are less of them same with mids

Mariner gray is a dying color and looks great on anything.

It might seem that way but try selling one! I've sold two 15" Mariner mids and 1 Mariner 260 cowl and they didn't fetch any more $ and believe me I tried. I used to think Mariner stuff was rare but after going to a bunch of boat races I realize that they aren't as rare as I thought. Let me make one correction....the 260 Mariner cowl probably got a little more ($100-$150) than a merc but no difference with the mids in my experience.

Thanks! Yes the Alien Mariners are much harder to find for sure. I wish I would have kept one of my 15" mids so I definitely support the idea that you should never sell yours. They can be painted but it's not the same imo.

Is your Avatar a 3.0?
Can you post a picture of it?

It's a 2.5 top cowling with a custom made bottom cowl to fit a 3.+L powerhead on a 12" Wayne Taylor mid. Basically the only thing stock is the top Alien cowl.
As far as value, I wouldn't worry about it. The color and decals aren't gonna make that much difference. Most all the value is in the powerhead, mid, and gearcase. The cowl is worth close to the same regardless of color. Like someone said before....do what looks best with your boat.
