Looking for some advice on OMC power trim units. We are currently running a 1990 mid section and trim unit with a 2000 225 HO powerhead. Wondering if theres a better (re. Faster) Trim unit from a different year. I heard about the fast track trim units on the later OMCs but been haven't found much info. about them. Can they be adapted to the older mid and is it worth doing?
Also I have been searching around for info on the different year exhaust adaptors. Is there a preferred year adaptor to run with this power head or Does the 1990 work as good as the rest?
Any info. would be much appreciated guys. Thanks!

You can run 24v to the unit you have.

The 93 and up have a better exhaust adapter. The fastrak units have a bigger trim range, at least for positive trim, before going into the tilt mode. I think the negative trim is the same for both the fastrak and the older units. I haven't noticed any difference in speed between the 2.

I think we are doing okay with trim range. Gets lots of negative and I believe 5 or 6 degrees positive. I likes the idea of 24V. Theres really nothing wrong with this pump its just a little slow. Does it hurt the longevity of the pump?

If I can get my hands on a newer adaptor will it fit the older mid and pans or should I be looking for a midsection, pans and cowl from a newer motor?

To run 24 volts make sure to separate the trim from everything else, does not seem to hurt longevity. 86/7 takes one pan while 88-92 a different one but same cowl. 93-98 a different adapter and cowl newer is different again. Since you are running a 2000 powerhead on a 90 mid what lower as drive shafts are different length.

Not sure if you can tell what gear case it is from that pic. I can take a better one when I get home if need be.

Sorry Racer Been doing some reading around and it doesn't look like you can i.d. the case just by looking at it. I can measure the shaft when I get home. Is the measurement from the top of the shaft to the top of the water pump housing?

Top of the shaft to the top of the case.

Thanks. I will measure it tonight

Picture of the shaft will tell what version it is. If you did not change the shaft when you switched powerheads you do not have proper spline length.

I measures the shaft at 22 1/4". Not sure if the shaft has been changed. This whole set up was as is when we bought it.

That's the newer shaft, older one has an o-ring groove at the top. You should be fine.

That's good to hear thanks for that. As far as the adaptor goes is it worth the effort to convert it to the 93' and up adaptor or is it a minimal gain over the older adaptor. The power head is stock as far as we know

I doubt if you would notice the difference by just changing to a later adapter.
