Finally had got some warm weather, so I pulled my boat outside to run on the hose today. I put new composite motor mounts in and also replaced steering yoke and bushings. After starting the motor, I had 2 leaks. I have water coming out from between the 2 piece exaust plates right in front of each one of the upper mounts. I did everything to the letter including using mercury perfect seal around the upper mounts before dropping them in. Two questions: 1 after torqueing the upper mounts to specs, I dropped the upper plate on and even after torqueing the bolts for the plates, I had a slight gap at the front until the weight of the powerhead was put on it. I am guessing seeing this gap should have been my first wake up call? 2 I was not impressed with the perfect seal. It is not very thick. Does anybody else use this stuff on the upper mounts, or should I have used permatex or something else? PLEASE offer any advice. I need to pull this thing apart again tomorrow, but I want to do it right this time with no leaks. Thanks for any advice, K-dog

K-DOG, I RAN INTO THE SAME PROBLEM INSTALLING THE BOB'S SOLID MOUNTS BEFORE. I HAD TO TURN THE O/D DOWN SO THE PLATES WOULD SEAL PROPERLY. JUST MY 2 CENTS.

I think my friend is running his leaking, or did for a while. We came to the same conclusion that we would have to turn them down to make them fit. Bobs says use some silicone and it is ok if they leak as long as you have water pressure.

Mine did the same thing, I took it apart 3 times before giving up. I ran the boat very carefully for the first couple of hours and the temp was fine. After a few times out the leak went away and has not been back since. It seems like the bob's mounts are just the slightest bit to big.

I had the same problem with the Bob's composite so I trashed those and got the Bob's aluminum and they worked fine, I also put a light film of silicone on them which seems to work fine.

Yep me too!
Just got the motor runin yesterday and have the same problem. I'm hoping the plates will "settle" in and the leak will stop. I plan on retightening (sp?) all of the bolts. I have installed Bob's mounts also with perfect seal. Had to turn them down to get them to fit. I think the problem is with the process of reassembly of the plates. Sometimes they leak and sometimes they don't. As long as I have good water pressure I'm not going to worry too much about it.

I called Jay Smith today and talked to him about it. He told me that he does'nt use Mercury perfect seal. He said for the two piece exaust plate, that he very lightly coats the mounts AND both sides of that plate gasket ONLY, no other gaskets, then installs. His word is good enough for me. As soon as I get the new gaskets, I will try again. K-dog
