Hey Guys -

I have been searching for a complete, real deal, J block, short shaft, low water pick up Mercury 1500 XS. So far I have found 3. One looked to be complete but rough, needing a total rebuild. One looked absolutely pristine but missing the power trim. The price is reasonable but the lead has gone cold. The owner is not returning calls or emails. The third one is freshly rebuilt, never fired but also missing the power trim. The asking price is nearly $10K which seems like crazy money to me.

I have a very original 1977 HydroStream Viper that I would like to power with a XS. I think this is the ultimate period correct outboard for this boat. I have the option and the mid/lower to convert a long shaft 1977 150 Merc into a pseudo 1500 XS, but I thought I should at least ask if there is one out there not being used someone might be willing to let go. I have cash. If someone would like to sell their 1500 XS please let me know before I spend it.

Thanks, Darrel 202-468-610five

Give Jim a call. He lives here in Bloomington, MN. I believe he might be here on screamandfly but I don't remember. But I do remember he has a beautiful Merc 1500 XS in his garage. I'm not giving out the price because it may have changed. He is a boat motorhead. If you go to the mpls craigslist and go to boats and then type in allison, you will see a red boat with a roll cage. Thats him. He has a few boats and motors. I've been to his house so I know he has it. Sometimes its for sale, sometimes not. Call him. Jim 612-865-8357

Thanks. That's Jim Sellner. I talked to him the same weekend I was in Wisconsin picking up the Viper. I thought it was sold but I'll try him again.

I know he had it at one point this summer but I haven't talked to him for a while.

I looked at the current CL ad and it's not listed as it was previously. It was on another Allison he was selling. At the time I spoke to him he had a buyer interested in the whole package. I was absolutely penniless, having just bought a second Viper. Now that one is sold and I sold an outboard I have cash. I think his motor is gone but I'll call him if my current leads fall through. Thanks again.

For what it's worth...
I have a Circle C block 1500. Short Shaft mid with solid mounts. No lower/cowlings. Last checked had 120psi.
Just incase you may be looking for a project. I planned to swap my 1150 with it, but I'm thinking I want a V6 at this point.

Thanks, that might very well work out if the 1500 XS I am waiting to hear on falls through. Sorry to be ignorant, but what is a Circle C block and how does that differ from a J blocK?

Rumored to pull harder on the top end than the J block.

The search is over. I brought home a very nice original unit and also picked up one in boxes as well. When all is said and done I will have two. Thanks everyone and thanks S&F!

WOW!!!!!!! Perfect color and perfect motor. How about taking that spare cowl you have and getting some Apricot decals made for it!
