Hello. I have a 2003 Merc XR6 150...serial OT631718.

I was reading around here and the manual, and it seems the 150, 175, and 200 of the same generation are essentially the same motors but just tuned and restricted to achieve different HP ratings.

With that, can either the 175 or 200 powerheads of the same generation "bolt on" to my 2003 XR6 mid/lower?

I ask because my boat is rated for higher than my current 150 and just want a little more power and speed. <<< this seems a cheaper route than a full on re-power.

Just thinking about options on re-powering.

thank you.

Yes- I have done exactly this-
The tuner in the 150 will be longer (others will check me on this) which as I understand will provide more low end torque at the cost of a bit of top end speed- so you might want to change tuner also-

You might conside having your 150 2.5 re-sleeved to be a 200- If you can do the tear down and rebuild work- I believe this is about a $1200 re-sleeve job. You will not find a 200 PH for $1200. You will need carbs sized for 200- easy to come buy.

fyi any 175 200 225 promax will bolt on the xr6 mid but some mods are required for exhaust on all motors toss the long tuner or cut it off on the promax you will need to work on exhaust outlets in adapter other then these thing the mids are identical with the exception of solid mounts they use on the 225

So even older model ones would fit my XR6 mid/lower?

And as far as modding the exhaust, what is there to mod? Say if i bought a different tuner and it will bolt on to the powerhead and slip over the mid/lower?

Sry, im new to this one, just figuring out how it works, thanks.

A 200 will physically bolt up and drop right on. The adapter plate and tuner will be slightly restrictive but you won't see any detriment except for top high rpm , at 6k prolly won't even notice any difference.

you could swap out for a 2.4 200 bell tuner but you prolly won't see much difference.

So between a 2.4 bridgeport tuner and an xr6 or pro max 150hp tuner there wouldnt be a noticable difference?

Ok, thanks for all the help so far.

Im not going to mod the replaced powerhead, just keep in stock form.

Say if I was to buy either a 175 or 200 powerhead, what should i look for?

Is there an ECU with the said motors? should i check if there is an ECU if there is one?

thanks.

my self i would look for 200 efi between 96 and some 2000 after that they are CDM ,im a switch box motor guy myself according to merc midas last 200 XRI serial number was 0G3030454 which is most likely a 95 model the big ramp 200 block started in 95 i think maybe a few in late 94 after that all 200 had big exhaust ramp which is what is desirable ecus are a big gamble there are a lot of not so good ones floating around out there
